I see freelancer as a person with more freedom. He can be with his own moral codes and such. Act helping one side or another without being paid and such.
Well mercinary is completely unthinking character, working for the money... who buys him, he works from those.
I have always thought that the difference was that a Mercenary may work for a company where a Freelancer will always just work for himself.
