I tried to buy it from the microsoft website as a sort of experiment. No luck. Most likely Microsoft have stopped producing it. Maybe we should try again now that this is the case

YEah like freespace2, its no longer on shelves, but maybe DL only from a few odd sites (GoodOldGames in the case of freespace2)
So now would be a good time to ask.

Or at least ask *nudge them* for a more complete modding tool

Sounds like a good idea but I don't know how much luck you will have because of the previous attempts have all failed.

If anyone is gonna ask for the code, it should be one of the Devs and not an everyday player

cause frankly
they know about ten thousands times as much about this game than the average players
plus I think that they can think up some pretty nice arguments/reasons or whatever

It's still available on the shelves. My current copy was bought maybe 6 weeks ago, in a store. Amazon UK lists 2 versions as in stock.

However if no one is willing to ask, I'd like to know the status of this from an official source.

Keep trying if you want but this 'petition' is going to go nowhere and microsoft will release the source code when they want to, no matter how many emails they get from people.

Microsoft is who you want btw, they own the source code.
