I couldn't read through alll of this because i started to cry:P.
I say this:
I love mining, but it is true that it is very unprofitable at the moment. If miners and fighters could be the only things allowed to mine in, and then the count inside asteroids upped furthur (20-50) then i reckon you would get big business.
BUT the prices of the goods which are mined have to go up alot
for example, Diamonds on New Berlin costing 1400 credits and selling on New Tokyo for 2800 credits.
so that means we can sell a full load of 4000 to a trader for 1000 credits each unit, and he make a profit, and we make a profit. We could go and sell it ourselves, but we'd make more money staying in Dresden (can you please put back the diamond fields there, but make them less rich than omega 11 please Igiss). The same could be for artefacts (costs 1000 to buy on crete and 3000 selling on NY or somthing) and Cardimine....etc etc.
Also, you shouldn't be allowed to trade in a mining ship (and should be displayed on the infocard) so give it a huge amount of cargo to cope with two traders comming for a full load of stuff like 8000-10000 cargo space. Anyone caught trading in it can't claim ignorance because its on the infocard.
My 2 pence.
EDIT:
If mining becomes more profitable, or nearly as profitable as trading, then the PMG will almost certainly see a resurgence, and the IND escort wings might have some work guarding us, as well as our own guard.
Exactly, maybe even adding one or two new minerals (extremely costly) would do? I haven't seen uranium ore (and I know LD-14 station in Leeds extracts it. ). This may be a bad idea though, therr'd have to be a whole new ore-rich asteroid field design.
As for the miner trade ban I agree in every aspect. It is exaclty what I had in mind
I don't know however, why fighters should mine. Small cargo hold makes mining inefficient for them.
Messing with mines is extremely time-consuming. Mine stats are stored in all ini files for all asteroid fields. It would take alot of work to fix that...
... actually, if someone will research ini files for this matter (both original Discovery that I've edited for more profitable mining long ago, based on pattern of other mods, and original Freelancer files) I'd be grateful. And if someone will spend time and fix those asteroid fields, you'll surely be credited alot.
I could fix that myself, of course, but my time is really limited right now and I barely have enough time to implement fixes for bugs being reported... sorry.
What about picking just a few asteroid fields and "upgrading" them. Exploration of the valuable mining fields would become a part of the mining faction's roleplay.
I have no idea how to mod, but if im bored next week, i will try to see what i can do. Noob at modding i may be, but if i can't play FL, trying to mod it is the next best thing..
i hope i dont screw it up badly....
anyway:
For the less valuable things like water, oxgen and stuff like that, mabey get them to drop 80-150 per shot, to fill up your hold quickly. Its not like its worth much money, hence the massive harvest rate. But that tis possibly for another mod version:).
I just hope people start comming to PMG for supplies when (if) this is implemented..
@majkp: Theres a little bit in tau 37 where niobium drops from 4-9 each shot, which is possibly the best harvest rate ever...is a tiny little place, but if PMG resurects itself, thats where i'll mine....or mabey in Gamma for artefacts. I can't decide!! the possibilities are endless:D.
we may have to pay the corsairs a tax or somthing, that would be fun negotiating.
If this gets implemented, PMG WILL return and we will eprsonaly pay for monopolies on a few selected spots. I was thinking though, we might try and and stick to cetain areas and not be wide spread.
But anyways. All of these Ideas really rock, and incerasing the amount of stuff dropped, the base sellable price of the mineable commodities, and making a miner ID, these ALL could greatl;y make mining what it was meant to be. If we could try and do this and send it too Igiss, im sure he would co-operate.
hum kool well i did hurt my leg and im out of work for a few days mabey me an pnzer could try this thing out and test it ect. time to take a look at some tortorals lol. i got the time to learn this i think any way. panzer what u think whant to help me test it out?.
The nature of the suggestion has shifted between the first post and the most recent one.:)
I like the idea of making the miner very good at mining... the special "mining" gun especially.
I don't like the idea of making each asteroid drop tons of stuff. Why? It would give you no reason to mine in a miner. You might as well just park a Large Train on the edge of a field and shoot asteroids. If each one gives you 50 gold or silver, your hold will be full in no time. Profit! But lame.
The idea original post wouldn't have that problem. Mining in anything but a miner would be exactly how it is now. But if you DID use the miner, you would be able to mine quickly and efficiently. Profit! And not lame!
The biggest problem I see would be preventing people from transferring the "mining gun" to another ship that isn't a miner.
Just make it a class 10 gun that can only be bought with the ship, much loike the forward guns, except not sold anywhere. I don't know how you'd make the loot drop more for a mining ship though.
