Sounds like a very similar problem like Avast had/has. In installation you needed to turn Network shield off. Or something like that. I can't remember it off-hand. I gotta go rummage the forums a bit to find it.
EDIT: The option that has to be turned off is called 'web shield'
Maybe the similar installation time option will solve the trick for you too. If you are willing at worst case to go through with un-install/re-install
This is a wild suggestion but if you have a machine powerful enough to run Vista or Windows 7, it might just work:
Install VMware (latest version), make an XP virtual Machine, and install Freelancer in the Virtual Machine.
Make the Virtual Machine Network connection Bridged (so the VM is like another real PC on the network)
Try to play and see what happens.
You may have to tweak the graphics and 3D engine in VMWare....
Have you allowed ports 2300 through 2304 to be used on your router's firewall? Not the computer's - the router's.
And you may need to knock the antivirus right down to its most basic functionality, though mind that even then a few antivirus programs are incompatible with Freelancer.

I've tried to find this option, but it seems to not exist.

Good luck
I'll try this if this other fellow cannot fix it via MSN.

I can connect when my firewall is not installed, and other computers in my house behind my router can connect, I'm pretty sure it's just mine.
Why don't you just deactivate your anti virus so you can play FL then activate it when you are done. I doubt very seriously anything will happen to your pc while it is deactivated for the time you are playing FL.

I can't figure out how to "Deactivate" it. You can even kill the processes in task manager.
wild suggestion, Get & Install Game booster from IOBit ( http://iobit.com )
It allows you to shut off un needed operations on your computer temporarily so you have more memory & less interruptions. Once your done playing, just de activate the game booster.
Small download & couldn't hurt to try..
also, you sure the ports are not blocked by your router?

I have windows vista 32 bit laptop (wont bore you with specs)
ANYWAY my install of discovery is shanked but it works.
THE ONLY WAY i found to get this working was to download (off piratebay) a paid version for AVG, uninstall your current one and install this one. It will work. Trust me. Then send me the 30 mill.
Im sorry but this seems the only way to me if you REALLY want to play freelancer online EVER AGAIN.

Major FAIL.
Suggesting that he should resort to software piracy, in order to fix what is clearly a configuration problem ? Do you work parttime at a Mumbai based tech support call center for Dell computers ? Because thats the only other place such a suggestion could come from.
