We will try running the player database from a RAMDisk. This should reduce HDD related lags, and it also will reduce the flserver startup time from 15minutes down to around 60 seconds if I remember the tests correctly. I'll also install a UPS so the server can handle power blackouts and secure that RAMDisk is saved to a HDD during a regular shutdown.

That sounds like a really neat plan to up performance. I hope things go well! My theory is that everyone has a particular computer weakness that haunts them (for instance, my one friend seems to have hard drives break more than average and another has everything overheat), so hopefully yours isn't with RAM. :D
