Different words mean different things to different people. 'Cr*p' is so mild that it isn't even considered a swear word by most people, at least in the US. It's not uncommon to hear it from children under the age of 10, just another word for poop. 'Sh*t' is the stronger, more offensive version. 'D*mn' is about the mildest swear word that is still considered a swear by most people. 'B*stard' is considered a fairly mild but insulting swear word when directed at someone, but as others have pointed out, it's actually used in Freelancer.
Then there are the more culturally specific swears. 'Bugg*r' and 'bl**dy' are considered quite strong in the UK, but here in the US they're barely used (usually only by fans of British authors), and when they are used they're hardly considered a swear word at all. From from an Australian friend tells me, 'bl**dy' isn't considered much of a swear down there.
'Frag', 'frak' and other words like those aren't real swears at all, they're just words made up and used in various sci-fi books/movies/shows to replace certain other real swear words. I've never heard 'plonker' before.
There are of course the most obvious, most offensive swear words, which I'm not going to spell out. They should certainly be banned.
Edit: 'Hell' is another very mild swear word. So mild that many people (myself included) don't consider it a real swear, though it can be offensive if you tell someone to 'go to hell'.
Then we have a page, full in HTML (Not a topic) with all the rules. Then a link (via IPB Functionality) can be listed at the TOP of the forum that says "RULES"...
I agree... This can be rather confusing at times. And with the hardcore crack-downing that's going on, you might get in trouble for saying "shiznit"... Although now that I spell it out, it does look worse than it sounds.
On the topic of... Well, bastard... I don't think thats such a bad word... It's just suggesting they were born without their parents being married. But then again any word construed as offensive by some people can be twisted into a technical meaning... But we wont go there.
' Wrote:Jeez guys, you want more rules, AND a list of words that you are going to check before going off to roleplay
on the server ... I think not.
I think we do. Why? Because people want clarification on this matter, they don't want to be confused and almost certainly don't want to be caught for saying something that sounds innocent to them but might cause a raging fiery beast come down from the sky. Rules are made to clarify, to balance. This needs attention as well.
Of course we can say something offensive without using those words, but that's a completely different topic. I once used word "bastard" in game (as an ooc joke, a reference to Kenny from South Park) and I've been told to shut up.
...I see burning fires on the horizon and smell a witch hunt in the air. Please, tell me it's only a dream!
@Hood mate, believe me that was my first thought. But as you know, the trouble with "common sense" is that it ain't. Now with people being fined for saying "idiot" and "plonker" I'm started to get "bloody" concerned. I really don't want this place turning into friggin PC dystopia, with an atmosphere of terror and fear of stepping one foot out of line. It's bad enough having it at work. I thought if we get am idea, here, of what people think is acceptable or not....
