Yes, bombers have an edge, this weapon is a tactical weapon and requires a lot of skill and restraint. The current weapons are 'sniper' weapons. Just aim right and pull the trigger.
The goal behind this is to add a 'splash' damage effect, but once the fighters close in, its VERY stupid for the bombers to deploy this weapon. Reinforcing the need for escorts for capitals.
dont know about 4.86 but try using nova torp in the same sense against incoming fighters in missions.....I had a GB buddy in the mission against BH in gamma. Shoot torp......start dropping nuke mines as you engine kill into a perpeducular flight path from incoming bogies (generally 2)....have the GB shoot nova torp while its in between the swarm of BH....if done right.... it a awesome. generally all ships lose shield... one or two die.

Aye, thats a tactic against NPC's, not all players are so, predictable. The Nova is a precision weapon though wouldn't you say? I mean, its turning is diabolically low, and with good reason.
This photon bomb is meant to splash damage everything in range, and in a decent range.
