I was lucky enough that the Canadian GW HQ moved to my home town when I was back in high school, I my friends and I have spend far too much time with our miniatures.

40k armies:
-Orks (Speed Freaks, Normal, and Feral)
-1,000 Sons Chaos Marines (long before he become good with this new codex)
-Saim-Hann Eldar
-Dark Eldar
-Tyranids

One question that I always like to bring up is what is your favorite part of the hobby? I like to think there are 3 parts 1)Painting 2)modeling 3)Gaming. Most people choose gaming, but personally I love to model and convert my miniatures. Started with ork armour (AKA just glue random crap together) and now I'm building Tzeentch possessed with bird heads and pegasus wings. How about you guys, what you're favorite part?

As for the choice between Necrons and Chaos. It's ultimately you're call, but things to know about each army. Necrons are probably have the least amount of variation than any other army, but that's not a bad thing. As it makes them a great starting army. For one, they're really easy to paint (but there's about 1000 different ways to do it) and they're easy to game. The typical necron strategy is to bunch up all your unites, keep them close to your lord so they can stay alive, and shoot away at the enemy until you come out victorious.
As far as Chaos goes, there is a lot you can choose from and game with. Having a choice of a regular force or a special force (As in Khorn World Eaters or Nurgle plague marines) is a big thing for serious gamers. GW has made chaos more user friendly with this new codex, and has put lass of an influence on the major gods (Khorn, Nugle, Sleneesh, Tzeentch) and more on chaos undivided (No god). This allows you to play armies with the full range of chaos models and have penalties. The chaos tactics very greatly from army to army, and gamer to gamer. Where one person may have a full melee army (possobly a Khorn player) the next may have a seige force. Chaos are also one of the armies that can use psychic/magic powers (with Tzeentch being the god of magic) which at one point in time at 3rd edition made them one of about 3 armies that could. But there are a good amount of psychics out there now a days (4th edition rules).
So, the chose is yours, but I suggest more investigation. Look into chaos and see if any specific army/model tickles your fancy, read up on the back story of the necrons, and most importantly think about which one you'd have the most fun with. Because remember, this is going to be you're hobby, make sure you're excited about it.

I collect an imperial armoured regiment basically an army of tanks and not much can beat it even in a 1500 point battle as my command tank is the Lemman Russ Vanquisher FTW. But the imperial guard are not the best choice to start with as they need masses of troops to meet the 1 HQ and 2 Troop choice minimum limit.

@Exile -- Yea, I Can see now. I have quite a large army, one of the imperial guard with about 2100 points of models. This Also includes my Inquisitor squad. My Daemon Hunters Quad is probably the most power unit I have, and in one battle, the Inquisitor himself killed: 2 Hive tyrants, and 1 Carinifex. The rest of my army mopped up the rest of the Tyranids leaving the enemy with his entire army dead and my casualties included: 1 Chimera APC.

If you have any Questions Mike, you have my MSN.

Dark Eldar FTW.

Or, if you're playing Warhammer Fantasy, Skaven FTW. Especially Clan Skyre. Ratling war machines are awesome.

' Wrote:@Azreal : I've been thinking of either chaos or necrons, what do you recommend?

Right to put it into a very basic view they are similar.
Chaos space marines have lots of different company, like space marines. But now chaos has a twist because of the warp. The warp effects beings and twists their bodies and minds using daemons and unknown hells. The warp can give people unnatural powers. Like strength, toughness or inititive. The army of any type is set up in the same structure. Troops are the core of your army, you can have 2 groups of chaos marines with say the toughness power. (Plague marines)
The Lord, leader of your army is big, make him crazy hard and powerful.
The chaos is very sinister, they are the type that do gory things. Spliting your chest open, giving you drugs to keep you alive for years. Then decorating their vehicals with your pain filled body.

Then moving onto Necrons, they live for themselves. They have a unknown background, creation? no body knows. They are robots, and as they do, you kill them, and they might just get back up.
They are rubbish in combat with normal troops but have mechanical powers that are ace. They shoot like there is no dawn. Then they have super weapons, like the nightbringer, can kill titans. And the momolith that cant be combated because it can thase through things.

Personally I would pick both:P. But necrons unknown evil, and chaos are evil to the bone, traitors and possessed daemon filled super humans.
