while freelancerish will always be a matter of opinion, i have to agree that civilian ship is the way to go.
There really should not be a problem with civilian ships that do not match up with a pre existing design in the game.
Personal ships will never manifest, but they are a very realistic possibility in the freelancer universe. The thing about this concept of a personal ship is in how rare the ship is used on the server compared to it being a one and only type of deal.
That sounds too off topic. Let me rephrase... in a way that leaving the first bit is necessary. anyways...
Ships that do not fit the "freelancer" opinion based mold could very well be created within the freelancer universe. Being such a ship is not mainstream, supported by a faction, or resembles other ships is reason enough for it to be limited on its use. It could be stuck on some far out base, and have its stats slightly adjusted so its use would not be wanted per use of ones own tech.
Right now a bad example of this would be the.... well we all know what ship.... Its a really good ship, good hitboxes for pvp, and a great weapons loadout with armor and agility to boot. It is not freelancer ish, its a outside universe ship. Its kind of abused by everyone looking to gain an advantage.
A good example of this would be the death scythe. Seriously, who flies this ship? Its an awesome setup of weapons armor and agility but it is stuck in the middle ground of raw power. It would be really good against ships of its class, but against the more advanced heavy fighters and very heavy fighters its weak and not used.
It looks nothing like anything in the game or universe.
It makes for a good personalized civilian ship for an interesting character. You could have built the ship yourself, thats why it looks so funky.
Out of the mold ships are ok as long as they dont become a staple of the universe that they shouldnt be. Staying in the background obscurity has more character than an assembly line throwaway.
This ship looks very nice, smooth, sexy. Someone with a certain taste designed this ship. Not everything in the freelancer world is bulky and sluggish, all through out there are signs of people with tastes and styles of cool and clean. I wouldn't want to see it as the next top fighter, but as a new sports model to play around in? that would be fun.
Of course the nastiest texture could be applied to it and it would fit right in with the grease monkeys too:D

Very good design, Turkish. However mesh is only a part of the ship, texturing means a lot for a lowpoly games like Freelancer.
What makes it less Freelancer-ish are unnecessary pointy wing parts/segments. The more you put those the more it goes into anime/manga direction. If you want details - put those on hull, extrude few surfaces slightly. It gets a bit blocky because of that but at least it stays within the style of Freelancer. Most details should go into textures anyway.
Overall the mesh is good, in order to make it Freelancer I suggest to remove those unnecessary parts. Just make it laconic, a little bit blocky. It'll also make texturing part easier as your texure will not turn into a big mess of parts because of UV mapping (if you do it classic way).
Thankyou, everyone this critique is very useful to me. As this is my first ship I've done exclusively for freelancer this is as much a learning experience as anything, I hope to evolve this mesh with your suggestions to a point where we can all agree on it and I can finish it.
Now, I have updated it slightly, as per the suggestions.
I've 'squeezed' the proportions together slightly to mke it seem more compact as well as removing the frontal fins.
The engine ports are mostly the same however the top intakes are now slightly diagonaly aligned.
Looks much better now and forget to develop this model for Liberty.
As many others before, me also would say BW.
On the other hand i must say this design would really fit as an Coalition fighter, because its general shape is remembering me on a coalition fighter from Starlancer.
For the further progrss i would say some slightly changes on the cockpit. Make the windows smaller and add some more struts, to show a heavy armoured cockpit.
Nothing more is needed. Everything else depends on the textures.
