If you read the first line...i said help. I mever said I didnt. If you ever talked to me ingame about it, you'd have known I say "id get it in a heartbeat if I could" like a broken record.

In my opinion Skype is the only convenient chat tool, because it's rather easy to use. But Skype is very good at voice calls, there it owns, and as others said, If you are in a voice chat group, then the game experience is totally changed... but it's your choice..

So, other than how awesome Skype is, any ideas on how to convince my dad to let me download?

Guess I didn't read carefully enough, sorry just got out of bed. Anywho, tell your dad that other programs similar to skype don't want to work on your pc, tell him that Skype isn't just video/voice chat, since most people (like me) use it for instant messaging only anyway.

Or, just download it, show your dad how it works and tell him to stfu.

I know some people that hide their identity because of many "internet predators". To convince him might be hard, but you could "sneak" it... If you don't use voice chat most of the time, it might be easier... its just another "chat program with people around the world, without releasing any personal informations". Though is just a simple program after all... you could type false information and proove it to your father... then might be OK

Buy your own computer? Roleplay on the forums instead?

Skype is just an extra convenience to factions to help them communicate better, nobody can force you to use it.

So they let you play a multiplayer game but they won't let you download an IM?

Try a complicated speech about how you're old enough to learn from your own mistakes, and that if they continue to mollycoddle you, they'd be doing more harm than good.

Try to sound grownup and responsible, do extensive research into Skype and come up with some points that could help your arguement come across as strong, in this area you have an advantage, your parents are ignorant enough not to know any downsides, so you can sparkle them with benefits. The downsides they do know of are fairy tales too, and could easily be disproven.

You could say that you're smart enough to spot internet predators, and that they're far and few, you can even hide your information so no one knows anything about you, anonymity here is your friend.

If the worst comes to the worst, offer to let your dad speak to one of your online friends, show him how harmless and friendly we can be. I'd personally not mind explaining to him how Skype is harmless, and how the Discovery Community is a safe bunch.

You could even offer a compromise, like letting him see some of the boring, Disco-related stuff you get up to on Skype, or you could offer to do more chores for a while to prove you're grown up enough. Be creative and smart, being a kid is the best time of your life.

Learn. Please...

Also, Jeremy, there's a good number of people who have parents who're a good deal more protective than they need to be. They're afraid of something they don't really understand, and probably feeding off the same sort of fearmongering bull that caused a mob of people in the UK to attack a paediatrician's (doctor the specialises in medicine for children) house down, thinking he was a paedophile...

Remember your folks are trying to do what they think is right. It's well meaning, so don't hate on them for it.

If you explain this to most faction leader types, they'll understand and make an exception.

EDIT: Also... What Akura said.
