' Wrote:How about a specially designed ship that just has to fly trough the gas field for *insert time here* to fill up with a certain commodity.
That's one of the gas-mining ideas I've seen get tossed back and forth, and I've gotta say, I'm not too fond of it.
Your idea is a slight variation from the one I've seen, though. Some people suggested that you could just sit in the cloud and you'd slowly fill up with gas or whatever the commodity was. But come on, really? Pew-pewing rocks, while being very simple, is still more work than just sitting around doing nothing. Your idea about flying suggests that constant movement would need to be involved. A bit better than just sitting still, but it's as simple as flying into a nebula, engaging cruise, engaging mouse-flight, and moving your cursor to the edge of the screen. Too easy.
Also, there's the problem of generating cargo. I don't think that commodities stop "creating" themselves in your hold once you fill up. And I think that having an over-full hold can make your ship explode. I think. Or maybe I'm thinking about the repair-laser issue.
It still makes you explode. It just changes what explodes you. (Schrodinger's cat)
I'll probably beat my head against a wall trying to think of ideas now D:

I'd say just add in miniaturized versions of the "volatile gas" as a floating rock texture and call it some stable Hydrogen isotope. (like say... i don't know 'edit: <strike>Tricarbonate</strike> Hydride Gas', seeing as H-Fuel is "A mix of elemental hydrogen, deuterium (H2), and helium-3 (He3)."
Make a new kind of "mining gun" that has a wide beam and high ROF. So you're needed to stand near one of the exploding clouds in Sigmas, and shoot at it with this, filling your cargo hold with halfore. Then you need to go to a nearby star, and sit in it's corona for a while, so that your power collectors (would need a specific ship) can use the star's energy to convert the raw mineable resources to H2, which is then shipped to the refineries to make H-fuel.
The problem is that although these are all good ideas for different ways of mining, as has been stated it will come down to the same system.
Shoot rock, tractor ore.
So I would like to see Chase's idea of a rock made from shrunken gas pocket models.
Whether we stick to Friday's way of small field around gas miners, or a standard large field like other ores does not matter to me.
We could always make the ore just a component of H-Fuel, having shorter runs to take it to where it can be processed.
Or we could just re-design the economy of H-Fuel to stik to the standard H-Fuel ore.

Now, call me out for gravedigging if desired - but after having a chat with some people on Skype I got to thinking about this again, and took a look at the old threads.
Let me start by saying one thing - I for one never abandoned Gas Mining.
In fact, I gave Cannon and Xoria the files I had about a year ago.
Have a 'mineable rocks' with different models/effects/thing of a cloudy thing object and have gas mining lasers/things for mining ? GMG get a bonus obviously and the gallic gas people
or a flhook command to gas mine or something
