Thrust with 200 speed towards them then turn on 180 degrees your ship using engine kill , so you will move away with -190 facing them while shooting- you can just wait 1k and cruise away or shot them on 200-300 meters and repeat.

I've actually found that the most dangerous part about NPC's is that they will ram into you. Or that you dodge into a meteor. Otherwise, their blasters don't do anything to you (my Hammerhead) and even if they did it wont be for long. Sometimes they really suprise you though; whatever you do, don't jump into a Jumphole without knowing there wont be a billion Molly's that kill your awesome ship full (FULL. 70.) of lane hackers (Londonberry!). Yeah, that'd be bad.

I thought that meant that I just had to upgrade my equipment. But now I have class 10 VHF shields, decent weapons, and even quite a bit of armor... but have the same problem.
Is this a balancing thing that I am just not seeing the big picture on? I mean, I have to start jinking and dodging for my life immediately, and can't even think about standing and fighting.
Or am I missing something gameplay-wise? Am I going to have to have a cruiser or gunship to keep from being molested by NPC's in non-guard systems?

I think the ballancing is made in a awy that if you fly a VHF with class 10 shields and mk8 armor, you can survive prettty much against any NPCs, as long as you dont try to fight them.
Alter your direction all the time and use thruster, and you will onnly get hit very little.
To fleey from NPCs, thrust away (while still dodging their fire) until you are at least 500 distance from the nearest one, then cut your engine and keep drifting at max thrust speed, but turn your nose towards the npcs and they will stop following you.
With a bit of practice that will allow you to survive against NPCs perry much everywhere, except a few times when oyu are unlucky.
Systems which are controlled by Nomads/Wild, Guard or Security systems are really not meant for easy travel, and unlike the old 1.1 version of the game you are not just being attacked by Fighters who are of an equivalent strength or slightly higher level, you will come against heavier and bigger ships and more of them. and the lack of a safe haven in those systems is an important issue to remember. Guard and security systems can be accessed by doing missions for their main npc clan faction till you go green with them then go into and out of the guard/sec systems and then do more missions till you get green enough with the guard/sec faction to be able to go into them
