I did that! Though I'd usually copy letters, rather than words that fit. Not sure if it was quicker.
These days I have an on-screen keyboard application, which is useful.
If the keyboard actually doesn't work, I'd recommend getting a new one. It's unlikely you'll manage to fix it after it's fried itself.
Edit: reading comprehension fail on my part. You can just pull the keys off. They press back into place. I just use my fingers/nails.
