"So" is also one of those words we toss into our sentence to introduce anecdotes or just start talking. We do the same with "well." And no, he didn't miss any commas. In fact, the one comma he DID use was unnecessary.

The part of speech is "interjection." Usage of "so" and "well" in such a way is largely colloquial.

It was a bad sentence at that. Considering he put 'So' in the front of the sentence to act as a transitional word, when really there was nothing to transition from in the first place. And I may be wrong, but I think he missed a comma in there after 'Shetland.'
