I like the new banner, but I am kind of fond of the old one.
Well, I guess changes are good, so let it be the new one.

As for the ranks, new ones as well. Mostly because of the 'stripes' idea, but also because ship fit in that background much better.
Under new ones, i meant 'anonymous'.

I understand this thread is not for discussion, the original request for new insignias was for that, but since the anonymous submissions were not submitted there I would like to comment on them here, aware of the fact that I might be stepping on the toes of this anonymous contributor.

I don't really understand why several people appear to like them so much. Personally, I think they're not very esthetically pleasing and quite unoriginal, since both background and font are 1 on 1 copies from the Matrix.
The rank characters, although from the Matrix font as well, look way too much like Japanese (actually most of them are Japanese characters, if not all), which makes no sense to me.
The fact that those characters are in a different location for the director clashes with my sense of consistency as well, although I realize the size of the Spyglass image makes this necessary, which in turn is necessary to make it recognizable.

What I do like about them is the border, the glow in the top left and bottom right is nice, and the actual ship pictures, which are sharp, clean, proportional and neatly orientated almost identically.
So, not bad as a concept, just too much of a Matrix ripoff for my tastes.

A different degree of professionalism is also apparent from the execution of the various submissions.
(I have a webdesign company and have worked with a lot of different graphic designers on various projects, just so you know where I'm coming from.)
Some of the submissions are clearly done by someone with extensive experience, especially (obviously) Xing's work. Although the actual ship images show a bit too much variance in orientation and amount of blur, the attention to detail he displays is astonishing and I guess I've always been a sucker for that sort of thing.

Oh well, hope I haven't offended anyone, just wanted to explain my opinion.

Allright.. I will put my comments...in order of how I like the submissions

1. The ones that I would use:

g) They are clear and pleasing to watch, they have strange characters that don't look too Japanese for me. (even if they are), they are different than 90% of all signatures on the server

f) Nothing fancy but nice and spot on for me

b) - almost same as f), Reasonably clear, not too many things on, fits with banner.... only some corrections in ship orientation (dagger is too much from the top) and maybe the gunship could be brighter.

2. The ones that I would not use:

c) just too many extra things everywhere, look like from some animated series..... LH should look professional and strict.

To give some comparison: it's like graphics and objects in C&C (1, Red Alert and C&C Tib. sun) - tend to look like real, vs graphics in Red Alert 2 - which have unreal dimension and very "painted" appear. Same with cinematics in these actually.

Also all the fancy things around are supposed to be background for the ship - they work that way in b) but here they are simply too bright in c)

d) and e) - sorry but they are just unclear and boring for me, especially the e) where everything is in faded blue
