I agree with you.

Many times the powers associated with factions goes to the leader's heads and they believe they can dictate to people RP, and this is bad. This happens around constantly...

Liberty, Rhienland, I've seen it first hand in many places.

How is that? I taught MYSELF how to be a better RPer and it was certainly not by watching official factions lol.

This holier than thou art attutude is the main problem with factions.

The powers are just the icing on the cake.

I'm not sure what arrogated power you are talking about. Do you mean the vain boasts that can't be actually backed up with action? Having run GMG|| for yrs I totally missed on this power we supposedly had. If your talking about the list of Faction Rights, it happens to be what I'm talking about too. Go ahead and take leadership of a faction and see how "influencing the storyline" really works, see how applying a FR5 really works, or see how influencing Indies works. In the end you'll know, as faction leaders do, this decisions come down to other staff not the faction leaders. The responsibilities, I'm not even gonna be jaded and say that's the only thing being applied to factions since it's not exactly being applied but it will be applied if any request/suggestion is made. I was notoriously uncaring of official status for GMG| and woulda let the status go but I was outvoted regularly in this department. In the long run, having tickled the faction rights many times since it's implementation I'd say that the processes that govern official factions is no different now then it was before the faction rights were posted.

edit add: No really the funniest thing about the FR sham is only a few handfull of people rise in ranks to faction leadership to learn about it while the rest of the community parades the FRs as something more meaningfull then I believe they'll ever be.

I value your perspective a lot, but keep in mind I am talking even earlier than the faction rights. Think back to the Praetyre debate (yes I was around for that.) Regardless, the fact that they are called "rights" is a symptom of the problem. If anything, they are a privilege which is earned.

Well the dynamic I see that remains the same from before the Rights and is still prevalent now is backroom talking. That's the hidden power. My reasonings in the backroom arguments can be overuled by the reasonings of someone else's logic even though I'm (or was) the faction leader. Not to say I haven't influenced anything written in the Faction Rights. I have. But it's sorta a 50/50 thing maybe, hard to say, because even after several days and 2000 words in essays later a faction request requesting a right is still not a sure thing and comes down to the decisions of other councils. I was able to influence Disco GMG RP no differently now then I had back in .84. Same way I did back then as I have most recently, just backroom talks and my fingers crossed. Leaders like every other player has to wait and see what the devs have planned and just roll with it like everyone else.

I cannot overstate the truth in these words. When was the last time you saw a FR5 carried out in the sanctions section? How many FR5s do you think factions file? How many incidents do you think could/should have resulted in a FR5? If you were to paint those numbers as a graph, the shape would be pyramid with extremely steep sides.
