So, let's make a clearence here.
After i taked down your shields and more than half of your hull
you was at 1.5k far from me, cos gunboat's thruster is slow. (if you just continued flying with your thruster all was fine).
But you engaged your cruise and CD was unable to stop you anymore.
The fight happened want you or no. (If you are enemy, nobody will ask you if you are ready to fight or if you want to)

engaging or running, it's your choice.
Did he fire on you? If so your definatly in the right, if not then i don't see how it could be classed as PVP just because you engaged him. If FL was real you would have situations where one person jumps in beside an enemy and shoots them, the enemy is outclassed and trys to get away, but they wouldn't be forced to leave the system just because you shot at them insted there would be a chase. The fleeing rule should only count if a Fight actualy took place(Fight means 2 sides or more attacking each other, not one person doing all the shooting), otherwise its a compleatly OORP rule.
The data you mentioned are most likely correct. However, whether a 'fight' happened or not is what I've been asking (myself) so far.
Just to state the obvious:
In my opinion, there are two sides needed for a fighting to happen. In yours, there are not and it's sufficient if one entity hits and hurts another to consider it a fight. That's where our opinions differ. And it's also the motive for my original posting.
It's pretty simple. Two combatants duke it out. The loser by boom or flee must leave. No need to make it complex. Unfortunately there is no way to MAKE someone adhere to the rules. Example: I think MOST people would agree it's best to wash your hands after visiting the restroom, but hey... some don't. Result: nasty hands.
When you witness a blatant violation you have a few choices:
a)kindly inform the person, b) report the person, c) chalk it up to not worth your time, wash your hands and move on.
Trial by forums is not a good idea, mob rule mentality doesn't work here. If you feel like ya can't let it go, I suggest option "b" Then move on and enjoy.
a lot of threads are labelled "trial by forum" nowadays. - some of those threads are quite interesting though and don t deserve such a label. - the foremost question is "what is a pvp fight" ... when do the retreat rules apply.
if there is a question, thats what the forum is for. naming names and adding a screen of the ppl might not be the best idea, but the base question of the thread is still there. - would have liked to get a clear statement from caylith to that one, too.
Immagine a situation:
A pirate piracy free in space, lawful come and try to put this in end.
After heavy damage, pirate engaged he's cruise and run. And after he docked and repaired he's back on duty. :nono:
For every gun shoot is always a reason.
In that moment you should ask yourself (why this guy is shooting at me?),
(i maded something wrong?)
To cruise (like nothing happened) when someone is shooting at you is not always the best solution.
Maybe it was not the best, but it was the only solution available.
A hint: It's nice to protect civilians, but even three capital ships will have a hard time taking down Rum Roger's Hyena. You had better to get a fighter on that. Pursuing pirates through debris fields is not a job for cruisers and battleships, even though the Liberty Cruiser is quite fit for the job because of its shape. Heck, hunt rather gunboats with that, anyway. A fighter can hide behind rocks.
Seems that the definition of "engagement" needs some clarifying.
The rules:
Quote:*For purposes of these Rules, an attack is draining shields to 50% or lower, or hull damage, or when a Cruise Disruptor is fired. Intentional ramming of any large ship is also considered an attack.
Unfair and illogical though it might be, if they even shoot a CD at you and then you hit cruise, you *poof* for four hours. Unless of course you have a trader ID, for whatever reason they have immunity to virtually all of the PvP rules.
EDIT:
Also, I would really like to see something in the rules about "Trader ID + Starflier = ignore, they don't exist". Its what people use to startup characters, and common courtesy says they should ignore and be ignored until such time as they get their proper ID and change ship.
That may be, Rum Rogers would have no idea that the guy in the starflier was rich. If only he didn't hear it on an open channel! Life of a pirate is about immediate opportunities.
//Maybe I am supreme - whatever. But Rum Rogers sure is better.
