Freighters are cargo ships.
Missiles are offensive fighter weapons.

Weapon does not fit ship role.

By that logic, why put guns on them at all?

This would make battle transports like the Bison very fun to fly, and it would give single-turret transports an effective defense to put in that turret slot.

Gunboat balance is a separate issue. I have no idea what the dev team thinks gunboats are supposed to be/do.

If you ever fought against a freighter then you know how difficult it is already to take down.
Just saying: You dont need more stuff to buff it since its already good as it is.

On the other hand...
Pirate freighters like the Bactrian often are combat ships, at least dual-role.
So on that note I can see the logic.
For a corporate or civilian freighter to have missile mounts is a little whacky imho.

On a sidenote, I'd vote for all transport/freighter craft to be stripped down of guns to a 2 to 4 hardpoint level. If nothing else it would increase the amount of escort jobs.

Not so much fun for someone wanting to trade alone though, but seriously, how many times does a lone trader outgun a pirate, or a smuggler outgun a cop?

I recall vanilla Freighters being able to mount missiles... but this is no longer vanilla and missiles have changed fairly drastically.

I think it would be a fair trade-off for Freighters (not Transports) to be able to mount a missile launcher on the CD mount, if they have one. That means loadouts become a trade off between the tactical flexibility of a CD and the firepower of a missile. Of course, balance isn't my department, nor have I had much of an opportunity to test out 4.87 missiles yet.

There was a sig here, once.

The opening post now contains a nice chunk of text.

First off, when I say freighter I don't mean a transport. I doubt anyone would want those 5k transports to stand a chance.

Echo's idea could work well, although the rather concise answer of AeD makes me wonder whether there is still any room for change,
