I have a feeling some people their windows 10 might not be genuine...
Microsoft said happily that everyone could update freely but the none genuine users reported getting ads bothering them.

Got windows 10 on my tablet (had some bugs with it like being unable to get it out of stand-by but the updates seem to do the trick.)
I also got 8.1 on my main desktop, I like both. I am yet to find any ads or whatever.
Even the build in windows 10 recording is decent.

Kek, I don't know a single person whose Win 10 is genuine without a shade of doubt. That is, I don't think a single person I know has a genuine Win 10. None of them seem to suffer from ads and whatnot.

Of course, it seems to me, that on some machines for some bizarre reason anything other than Win 7 causes horrendous problems. I couldn't for the life of me make my mother's HP probook work with windows 8, 8.1 or 10. Boot times would exceed 5 minutes followed by another 5 minutes or so of almost total, 100% disk usage for no reason, unresponsiveness. Even when performing a 100% clean install it wouldn't work. In the end I just installed windows 7. Now the laptop runs as a swiss watch.

Fair warning avoid installing Nvidia GeForce Experience if you have an nvidia gpu. The Nvidia Backend process can obliterate your performance for absolutely no reason at times, I've experienced it myself.

Okay, this explains everything then.

Yeah, 8.1 is nice that you can do that. That's part of the reason why im not upgrading my laptop from 8.1 to 10

didn't read all the posts, but here's the best advice you're gonna get:

START DISABLING "THINGS"

such as appxsvc, xbox live(really annoying),windows store service, the one to defrag the hdd and...can't remember what else caused problems

after you do that...you really start enjoying win 10 without all the things that used to freeze your pc,because used your hdd at 100% Wink

I'm not sure I'd say that they've outright "screwed up" with W8.1/W10, but neither of them are what I'm looking for as a desktop user.

i'm a bit curious about the bolded statement as i use 8.1 on my laptop and it runs and works like a better version of 7. I have mine immediately proceed to desktop after login when i reboot, so i dont ever touch the tiles section. I'm not sure why you'd need something like classic shell when using 8.1 on a standard desktop or laptop.

I know it's not easy trying new things, but give one of the easier linux distros a go, you might actually like it.

besides.. freelancer can't be played on a linux,we don't have enough players,ok? Wink
just disable those 4 things and you won't have a problem anymore with win10,that's what i did..

The workaround for me was to get 10 Pro and use a few of the business configurations to stop it telling me i can't do things. But it was time consuming to go through a load of stuff on the HDD and changing the security settings for the files i wanted to change so i could actually edit them without the continuous 'Access Denied' shenanigans. Anyone actually figured out why it does that? seems to me Microsoft set their security stuff a tad too aggressive, even AS an Administrator i can't edit things without using the actual system Admin account and do it all that way. - Still can't get Windows Defender to die, though. The 'Microsoft Antimalware' thingy still appears and saps bandwidth a lot of the time until i notice and mash 'End Task' about 10 times to make it disappear.

But since i took four hours to murder various useless processes i didn't want, it's kinda working now. Every month i usually turn Windows Update back on and update the security stuff, since to hell with letting that thing run rampant, suddenly downloading stuff in the middle of a game or restarting the PC when I've left the PC on overnight to download stuff. Mind you i noticed it's been considerably less sluggish as an OS since i installed the thing on an SSD. That seems to have dealt with the unresponsiveness in places.

On the plus side, it seems a bit more friendly with newer games that were released recently so that's a good thing.
