True. Currently all I have is a trader. I started him with the standard that everybody else gets.
Usually a cap ship is property of a Military, and your just put in command. My feeling is that you need to prove yourself before you are given command of (read Permission to buy) a cap ship.
Now I am sure everybody here has NEVER used a trader to finance their other characters, right?

Well - not necessarily.
For example, my trader character is an APM pilot. (And CEO of APM, but that's part of the RP.)
It just so happens that APM is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Search/Destroy Agency - which is where my other related characters happen to work. As a point of fact, I started my bounty hunter characters BEFORE I started my trader character. AP Manufacturing supports the S/D - not just myself, but others that need it as well, by providing materials for ships, replacement parts, and of course, assorted funds for operations.
While we (the S/D) don't have any large cap ships, it would be entirely IN RP for me to purchase a BHG Cap ship. (Sometihng larger than the 3 Gunships that we currently have, and seldom fly.) That's what APM is out there to do.
I realize, also, that you said independant trader. Well, there are also (way too many) independant bounty hunters out there, too. Well, those guys could have the Dark Knight syndrome. Playboy billionaire by day (power trader / Bruce Wayne), avenging crusader by night (Indy BHG / Batman).
