As most anyone who knows me will know, I'm completely against the insane swearing rules on this forum and on the server.
Aside from online communities aimed primarily at children, I've never even heard of one that has in any way comparable swearing rules.

To quote myself from the last such thread:

I'm pretty certain the majority of the community agrees, but that's been the case for years and nothing has ever changed.

It's a good sign that there seems to have been a loosening of tolerance in regards to rp posts, I hope this also follows into the game.
There are plenty of online communities, pretty much all in fact, that manage to strike a balance between "using swearwords" and "pointlessly insulting people". Disco is just a special potato in this case.

Did he end up answering the question? Because I reckon that's a valid one Big Grin

If they do decide to allow that as part of RP (which I think should be allowed) then I hope Devs add an ejectable Human Waste Disposal unit to all ships. It would be a humorous fulfillment of - "4.2 Demands should be reasonable and only one monetary or cargo demand can be issued during each piracy interaction." I'd say if they tractor it in then this rule would have come into effect ending the piracy encounter. lol

I guess I just don't see the point of censoring it.

Like, it's one thing if it's directed at someone maliciously, but then they're violating rule 1.2 anyway, so it's covered by that already. And it does restrict RP, whether for better or for worse. I find that I do have characters that occasionally (or frequently) want to use swear words--not because I want to swear, but because it's appropriate for them in the moment, or because they're just the sort of person who's crude and doesn't give a fuck about what you think.

I understand that people would like to see more creativity in RP, and that they feel that censoring swearing fosters that, but I don't think that it's right to say that they're bad writers if they want to have a character swear without having to censor it.

I've been in RP communities before where there were similar concerns--not about swearing, but about the idea that if they allowed people to do or use something, then it would break the community because everyone would do it.

In every one of those cases, it didn't.

Sure, people made use of their new liberties much more for a time, but it tended to be a short burst of interest, before leveling off to more sane and normal degrees. And, based upon what I've seen of Discovery lately, it's not a place where people would suddenly start throwing swear words around left and right just because they could.

If the argument is simply because people want to keep the forum a more classy and civil kind of place, then that's different, and I totally understand that too. But say it's because of that, and don't make it about writing, please.

Quick edit: I'd like to add that I do enjoy having fewer swears in my interactions on the forum, but I much prefer people having the option than people being forced not to.

Another quick edit: I would like to clarify that adding more liberties just because it doesn't tend to break the community is not always the best choice, but in this case, it really does feel harmless. Like people mentioned earlier, Discovery is kind of an odd one out given its policy on swearing.

I get your point...like, when a drug gets legalized...for a while, there's a spike in use, but after a spell, it levels off & no longer remains an issue.

I'd hypothesize it falls under the "Law of the Forbidden" in that, if something taboo is no longer disallowed, then the desire to exercise the new freedom looses its luster over time.

I hold fast that the original & actual intent of the no swearing rule goes far beyond the elementary arguments presented here in this thread.

As illustrated in my last post, I'm not opposed to easing up on past restrictions here & there, but not a single one of you on the swearing side seem to be willing to compromise.

for example,

If I were to pirate a player & say, "F*ck off c*nt! Pay me or I'll end You!"

Does those two tiny little edits take away from the malice in my characters demand?

To be specific, I'm saying that if you believe that you can't play your character properly without a modicum of censorship that the forum mandates, then y'all utterly fail...not only at the point of RP, but you also, at the ability to see past your own limited imaginations.

Does what I say piss you off? Then prove that my point is unreasonable.

I'm calling y'all out.

Nowhere in any of your posts am I seeing an actual argument in favor of the filter. Instead I see something that approaches a defense of the status quo, but seems to mostly just be a platform from which you look down on people.

Have you considered taking your high horse to the glue factory?

How so? Site examples where appropriate, so I can better understand your point...on the surface, you seem to miss my point in lieu of my obvious aggression.

To be crystal clear, I stand in the middle ground. Those who prefer to swear, have at it...but don't offer a BS argument that the swear filter takes away from being able to RP a character properly.

As I've illustrated, it's perfectly possible to compromise.

But, if you choose to take my style over substance, then that's something beyond my control & I accept that.

Like it or not though, my style drove you to post at least on the periphery of the subject.

That's a start at least...Now what's more important to you...complaining about me, or posting an opinion in the subject at hand?
