I like the idea of a reveal map code thingy...
but I think the price needs to be really steep or have to get admin approval so they can manually adjust your map for you.
And yes duh there is FLC and Datastorm but isn't it nice to have the map all nice and clean looking in the game itself?
Heck I wouldn't mind it if the code revealed one random system per use.

They are worth $1,000,000 USD if you find someone willing to do such a trade.
Why So SIRIUS?...(Give credit to my brother for this one XD)

How about tying map unlocks to IDs? An Outcast ID would unlock all of the Outcast ZOI, etc.
Or, tie it to a map data commodity. You could buy a generic trader one that would show all of the house lawful bases and jumpgates, and for 20 you could get an Outcast map data pack that would show all of the OC ZOI.

Just a couple of ideas.

Guys...

When I have a new ship for a character that has already been there, or I'm working on something similar to that, can I make a small suggestion?

Make sure that you start Freelancer windowed, so you can just click out of it - and have DataStorm up and running. Quick, painless, and easy. Oh, this ship doesn't know where that JH is? Even though it's the same character? No big deal - click on DataStorm, move your mouse over the quadrant, and lo - the coordinates appear.

Problem solved - without any kind of mapping program or code change.
I'm glad you have a decent computer. I don't.

Incidentally, how many people here are adamantly against people using Datastorm for anything except when it's a convenient way around whatever suggestion someone proposes?

Those sound like great ideas.
Prehaps in the form (For Data Packs) buying it from people in the bar as you would buy info on Jump Holes.
Just more expensive.

This idea I can get my head around. Upon purchase of an ID, all relevant base and jumphole locations are uploaded to your navmap via FLHook. The only concern I can think of is possible lag, as with all "big" FLHook commands, but if that isn't an issue I think this would be wonderful.

As for generic IDs, they should either have the very basics (Pirate ID has HQ of each pirate faction, Independent Trader ID has all planets and shipping complexes) or none at all.

About map data commodities... they'd probably have to be removed as soon as the FLHook routine was activated, otherwise one of them could just be passed around to everybody (even if the routine only triggered upon purchase, dock-sell-buy-undock). I would have House planets offer maps of all publicly accessible bases, lanes, and jumpgates in their systems, and guard bases offer the military grade maps that shows battleships in active service (like, say, the Westphalia) and installations hidden from the general populace (like bases in Alaska, or maybe even Willard). Pirate maps would show common targets and all bases of the relevant faction.

I recommend tying these things to IDs, but map data commodities would still be appreciated.

Great ideas. If the command cannot work I would be willing to travel around to a base to purchase the maps for systems, or id's, but it does not alleviate the original problem of having to "explore" the systems for each new character.

I do not know how the id's will work because an outcast having so many allies would need to have maps for a few systems, so my question would be what systems would be included? LN? BAF? etc.. The factions with bigger zoi would need more systems.

Don't know. Lets face it, if you are only given the systems with outcast bases, what about the systems their allies are in? Would you still need to explore or buy the maps for those systems?

I just do not like having to re-explore for every new character. Stopping at each base in a system and so on.

I have already done that with my trader. I do not want to do that with every character. I guess I will until something can be done.

Hey Kal-el!

I kind of agree here, and I have an idea, but I'm not sure exactly how it would be coded into the game. But for the data-packs that are sold in bars, perhaps you could increase their frequency-of-occurance and instead of it always just being a -single- JH or a -single- base, perhaps if you're buying info off of a DSE-agent in the bar it could give you all or some DSE bases? or just a random clumping of bases/JHs/etc for an increased price? And the more it costs, the more info you get from it. And have local police/navy agents in bars on the central world of each House (London, Tokyo, Berlin, Manhattan, Crete, Malta, etc) always sell a -basic- map of basic worlds and bases within their house's ZOI for a decent price?

It -is- a pain, to always have to start at square one. It's like taking a road trip, even though you've been on the road trip before several times, but you always burn your map at the end of the trip. I mean, isn't it reasonable that a Trader would invest in at least some basic navigation maps before heading out into the utter VASTNESS of (Discovery Freelancer) Space? Or that someone in a house military would automatically have Naval Base locations built into his ship?

At the very least, PLEASE increase the potentency and frequency of the buyable nav data in bars (data packs, right? Unsure of the proper term here.)

There's got to be a way to balance it, both in locations to purchase this info, and cost of doing so. Somewhere we can meet in the middle, because it is bloody tedious to dock at every single base in every single system with every single character (ESPECIALLY IF IT'S THE SAME CHARACTER!)

Of course, on the alternative side to this, it gives a pretty big advantage to long-time Veterns (as opposed to relative newbies like me) who have multiple accounts and lots of money, and on much older accounts have explored almost the entirity of space and would be rendered (potentially) exempt from doing -any- exploring if a basic code is set that unlocks the map for every character you have because you've taken the time to explore it all at least once.

So I'm alittle on the fence here, I think the idea really needs to be hammered out and discussed more thoroughly.

Overall

I vote YES...I repeat YESYESYESYESYES!!! again.....YES!
I have one char who has been almost everywhere and it would be beyond awesome if I could transfer his map and ALL detailed info to my other chars. I've "Discovered" all I want, now I want my other chars to get down to business but instead I waste hours filling their maps in too.

EDIT... and it doesn't have to be sold in the bar or anywhere or cost anything. JUst make it an FLhook command and be done with it.

I fully support this idea.

And at the people complaining about discovering:
Who said you would have to use it? It would be 100% optional.
Everyone might not want to discover the same jump hole every time with all of their characters.

This whole "There is a reason why this mod is called discovery" excuse has more flaws than a governmental body.

Agree with these guys.

I dislike running FL in window mode and having to switch to FLCompanion because I cannot remember a JH location.

Anything I say is not intended as offensive, and to try and deliberately misinterpret it as such would be an attempt at trolling via misrepresentation.

It's not a conspiracy, it's localised bias. They're not intelligent enough to form a conspiracy.
