Virus.. LInux is *NOT* Freeware. It never was

Read the GNU GPL Version 2.

http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

Basically, the software is *free* to be redistributed, however you cannot make money off the software if you change any of the source code and then attempt to redistribute it. You must also make the software source code freely available for download.

It's not free as in beer. It's free as in Free speech.

Vista sucks. Anything for a normal person/player, XP will do the job. Vista is just something for those crazy computer nerds. It has some extra touches to it, but comeone, I mean, I just instlal WindowBlinds and there you go, a ful different feel and look to Windows XP.

No Spidervlad, Vista is not for computer nerds. Linux is for computer nerds.

Vista is for glossy-reading CIOs who think throwing money into Micro$oft's deep pockets will somehow make their company run better, and get them a big fat yearly bonus. Vista is also for poor mom&pop computer users, who don't know any better, and blindly hand over their hard-earned money to a slavering Dell/Gateway/HP salesman.

Any computer nerd worth his salt will not touch Vista with a barge-pole, unless he's working for a glossy-reading CIO. In which case he goes home and scrubs himself clean every evening.

Hehe Nicly said Onca! I use Linux in my info tech class and its ALOT better for what 'nerds' would want a computer for! Cool for making websites too!

I haven't picked up a Vista box and I haven't searched anything about it and I dont want too until its at least a year old. Then It might be good.

' Wrote:Well my dear evolutionary friend, explain this then: Where I'm at almost all buissness tend to use either windows 95 or 98 and they yet keep expanding and upgradeing in their services. For example the gym I go to uses 98 but in order to get to the equipment you must first go through a security door in which you get your whole hand scanned. So Does this mean they are archaic? Not at all. I think that the "revolutionary" theory of your professor is correct to a certain degree.
As far as Ive found out most theories are only correct to a certain degree.
Anyhoo, what do you mean they keep expanding and upgrading? Do you mean they go in an alter Windows 98/95, or do you just mean they make products thatll run under Windows 98/95?
Besides that there could be several reasons for still using those old OSs.
1) If they do the job why change them? Know of a few companies which still use DOS for some purposes.
2) It costs money getting a new OS. Not all companies want (or can afford to) change it.

' Wrote:I can say this now.

My business got notice that we will have to upgrade to Vista within one year before they start canceling XP upgrades (I.e. support for it or something like that in Windows Update).
That reminds me of my uni, theyll do the same thing. Did the same thing with XP, since Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 98. Most people complained because then theyd have to learn a new OS, but they persevered.

' Wrote:I generally agree on the revolutionary aspect with you Xit, but in Vista case the revolution is mostly invented by MS sales department. There's one large difference between XP and Vista: their predecessors. After the horrible Windows ME, Windows XP came like a breath of fresh air. However, everyone generally agrees that XP is a good system, and dropping its support in some areas (gaming, for example) is not the best we could expect.
True enough XP was (and still is) a great system compared to what was before. Competing with XP and its legacy will be hard.

' Wrote:edit2: I looked at some of the screen shots... Useless eye candy. The desktop itself is a huge waste of my CPU and Graphics performance... Tsk, tsk. Evil Microsoft. I'm starting to seriously consider learning Linux
If you consider using the usual ~9mb RAM and 0% CPU power (as XP do) to run Explorer (which handles the desktop) a huge waste of CPU and graphics performance then I agree.
The side bar does eat a whooping 5 mb RAM extra (no CPU power)! Argh, what am I to do!!!!:P

' Wrote:Heh.. that security stuff they were talking about is just rubbish, some company checked, apparently it let 80% of viruses past.. how very secure.. atleast you'd be protected from the 20%...
Thats interesting, wondering if you could find a link to more info about it?

Appears that Im not a computer nerd then. And Ive even spend the last five years studying computer science, and been fooling around with computers for the last 16 years or so.
Then again several professors in computer science could then also not be called computer nerds.
Anyhoo, could you please explain why any computer nerd wouldnt touch Vista, and whats so bad about it?

And for that matter why you cannot (more likely will not) spell Microsoft properly? If it has anything to do with Microsoft earning lots and lots of money on their products (whether theyre any good or not), then Im not interested in hearing it. They are a business company, they exist to earn money, and in that respect they do a bloody good job, and I cannot do anything but respect it. Whether or not you dont like how they run their business, shouldnt colour you opinion on how their software works.

Just a heads up to everyone that is currently running Microsoft Vista. I have been running it for sometime and have not had any problems with playing Freelancer until the latest mod was released. I was using the 4.82 mod and did not have any problems. I actually had less disconnect problems. The one problem I am having issues with is that the 4.83 mod will not install only complains of having a corrupt file "Common.DLL". I am currently attempting to uninstall and reinstall to see if this is a possible problem which was recommended by one of the admins - (greatly appreciated for the help). I am not sure what is stopping others from not connecting, but I might be able to answer some of the questions regarding the setup. I will say I dont believe that the problem is the mod itself since others are able to install and use the mod, this problem may be related to the mod and Vista in some way. I will update if I find an answer on this topic.

Sorry, I saw it on the BBC, check their website, it might be on there...

BTW: You can't dis Microsoft on their buisness sense... Their stuff is hated SOOOooo much, yet basicly everybody uses it... You can't really moan about their stuff if your using it.. you could just switch OS...

It isn't as simple as that. Gamers can't switch because most of their games are exclusive to Windows. Some companies can't switch either because the software they need to run their business is also exclusive to Windows.
