Actually, fighting against capital ships is why I don't like this rule. I want to be able to outfly his guns. Even with cruise, Capital ships maneuver like a brick. Cruise won't change that. Starfighters, on the other hand, could use cruise to dodge out of the way of a large ship and quickly move in to exploit a blind spot where the capital ship cannot shoot, or to loop back around and start shooting the capital ship's engines.
I can't see capital ships having any use for mid-combat cruise anyway. Even at a speed of 350, they still turn like a brick.
You don't need to turn when your opponent high tails it out of there. If they are making a bombing pass and they engage cruise, guess what, they flee. If you actually run, then you flee and they can catchup. So long as they don't e-kill at cruise and nail you at thrust speed, then no rules are broken. Its just unsportsmanlike.
I've argued that cruising is a valid combat tactic before but it's pointless trying to change the rules or the minds of the admins who made them.
The reason this rule exists is so that people dont cruise away to regenerate shields or land for resupply, fighter battles are long enough as-is.
Thing is, instead of saying "if you cruise more than X meters from a fight, you're considered fleeing and forced to leave the system" they made it "if you cruise, you're out, period."
It prevents ships from using cruise engines for either a manuverability increase or to catch up to opponents even when their intention ISNT to flee from the fight.
Likewise, I really hate the whole thing about being forced to leave a system if you flee. You didnt die, and realistically there's nothing stopping a pirate from running from a bad situation and coming back when things are more in his favor. Problem is the other side's players (usually lawfuls) just cry up a storm that the enemy ran away, restocked, and repaired at a base, then re-engaged while they were still low on bats/bots/ammo... so why the hell didnt you land after the fight as well?
Basically, it takes out a big chunk of strategic/tactical flying in the game because some players cry when they lose.
