I wrote a big long explanation of why this is a terrible idea but Chrome for Android crashed.

This is a bad idea.

Definitely not, and it would be easy as IMG (only T23, T37 are reasistic). As you said... try that in the Omicrons, or Omegas. No one will care to search systems.

It would come down to faction leaders PMing each other "Hey, where are you? Where do we meet?", which is no way better than looking at the list, as it is meta/oorp, too.

I agree with all the people that say that we cannot afford to make it even harder to actually meet and interact with each other.

And for all those who speak from the transport point of view that fears the pirate spying his route on the list: Look at it as a game. You have the same "weapons", use them. Use of player lists, departing player, joining player, etc are the only parts in Disco in which the trader has the same chances as the pirate. Smile

Voted yes but for a tweak: The system list should do this, until you're in the same system as other people. Then, it should tell you you're in a system with others.

Otherwise, AWFUL IDEA. Interaction will faceplant.

Will there be a skype/teamspeak/ventrillo ban as well?

Chat list is a very minor part of metagaming, as said before all this will do is make interactions even harder.

Had plans of proposing this few years ago.

Technically, all points spoken in this thread are correct. Reducing metagaming, making harder or not possible at all, to evade pirates or police.

However, the very truth, that we have nearly more systems than player max limit, is what makes this idea kinda useless, considering of rescaling the chances of in- game interactions.

Either devs reduce the amount of systems (which I and lot more other folks suggested many many times before) or this shouldn't be implemented at all.

I will vote yes, in hopes that someday, we might see system number drastically reduced, after which, this idea's implementation would just rock.

With current amount of systems, amount and distribution of players, it'll be a potential disaster.
Don't think only in "I'm a pirate, will it make my life better?" categories, there're plenty of other roles.

Just an example - hell, I'll gather RNCs and go on syswhailing around Liberty, without entering NY. Or do same as a Hessian in NB, or as an Outcast/Rogue in Liberty, again.

Now, tell me the chances to intercpet fleet's/pirate's gang movement, when you won't have a single friggin idea on their location, because we won't be even touching TLs/JGs.

Now imagine same in Omicrons. How do you like Corsair/Outcast fleet suddenly dropping on Malta's/Crete's orbit and ganking the hell out of everything before they even gather? Or Hessian fleet on Crete's orbit? Because nobody saw them coming.

Are IMG guys really willing to search for a bunch of Ranseurs and Stortats "Somewhere in the Taus"? Same applies for Colonials and Gallics. It's already hard to find somebody even if you know the exact system he's in. when the person in question doesn't want to be found.

I can also imagine that such change will provide ground for meta-spying, i.e. creating characters for the opposing faction just for the sake of joining their group, and then spoil their general location over TeamSpeak or Skype, because it will matter in an environment like that.
A dick move? Certainly. Will it be used under those conditions? Definitely.

What I'm trying to say here, is that proposed change affects far, FAR more thing than Pirate/Trader interaction.

While I agree with your first and last points, your examples seem pretty off. Who cares if a bunch of RNC fly around liberty Syswalling? They're not doing any harm out there, so they can just be ignored, if they want activity, they can come into a populated area, and the LN can get info on where they are, from whoever they attack.

Same with IMG. No I dont expect them to search the entire taus for OCs. Why should they? The IMG are there to mine, if the OCs want to hide, GOOD! The Ocs know where the mining spots are, and can come attack if they want activity.

I like the idea,im voting for this.
I think about it near 1 year ago and talk with our players, but didnt post because flaming\troll..you know. Like i didnt post about gallic cruisers.

But i want it add to game. Only group of people must tell each other where they are.
If we will add this to game, what this will give?
>more real patrols in systems looking for enemies.
>more unexpected situations traders\pirates
>battles will be more interesting, because enemy dont know where is your main fleet is.For example Leeds\Dundee\Newcastle.
>people will scout, changing their locations in systems, and about it nobody will know without scouting.

THIS A GOOD IDEA.

I just had an idea, I dont know if it possible, but if the regional chatlist was implemented, then it could be a good idea to give every faction, a sort of version of the TLAGSNET police factions have. Except instead of scanning folk who used lanes/gates, it would scan anyone who passed by an npc (ship or base) of the same faction. So for instance if an OC player passed by java, or an IMG NPC patrol, they would pop up on any IMG player's net. This makes sense, because INRP NPCs are supposed to be people too, and would report things like this, it also makes sentry stations do their job.

This would somewhat make up for how it would be harder to find people, but in an INRP way. Police would still be the ones to get the benefit of lanes/gates. Also if this was implemented, I think all the scanners (including TLAGSNET) should be able to see the ID, and shiptype. It doesnt make sense that they can scan weapons/cargo but not the ID or IFF which is MORE visible than the cargo - you only need to be within 10Ks to see the IFF, you need to be within at LEAST 4Ks, AND scan, to see the cargo.

The downsides of this would be:

A: Im not sure if it can be done, but if TLAGSNET can be, this seems possible.

B: It reduces the benefit of the police TLAGSNET in comparison, which may mean police factions need another bonus, to make them as appealing as military factions.

What do you think?

It 'makes sense' the way it is now--you need to register your ship with the local FTL relays so you can receive incoming messages. This is already supported in lore, and is even more technologically simple than cell-tower triangulation we have with current tech today.
