If the player won't experience the vanilla game, he won't be able to compare it to the modded version and appreciate the change.

I highly recommend playing vanilla a bit just to get the idea what developers made for gamers and only then migrating to mods in order see what other gamers managed to improve.

I might need to ask a friend of mine for his copy of Stronghold Crusader. I remember that game being awesome.
