Myself and specific members of my faction shoot everything off these ships and then let them escape. a transport with 6 turrets or more would cost more to repair than would have asked from it.
shooting off thrusters gets bonus points.
but yes, if transport turrets costed much more, say 3 mill+ each, then losing them would REALLY hurt the wallet rather than just 400k each
Not really, the trader will just suicide and get his equipment replaced free of charge, they are still dead and have to start over again losing no more than if you had to kill them.
The only difference is that you will not have any loot to pick up.
Not exactly. Imagine the guy is doing a run from Bretonia to NY. The trip is roughly 15min. If the fellow shoots off his turrets once he enters NY, then it means that he has a choice: Get 10mil for the trip, but has to replace 8mil in turrets, or planetdive and not lose his money in turrets, only losing 500 000$ in cargo, but lost 15min of his time.

turrets don't cost 8 mil, if a pirate manage to destroy everything, turrets, thruster, shield (doubtful) it makes about 5mil, which is current minimum demand.
still there is profit for trader because pirate gives nothing, ant this is somethimes even more valuable than whole cargo.

About that, whats with all the 15 mill demands these days?
What are you hauling? What is your ship size?
If you're a 5K hauling ore, expect big taxes, if you're a freighter/small transport trading standard commodities, file a sanction, simple as that.
My demands are always reasonable IMO, 20m to a 5K carrying 50m worth of ore is fine, that's just a 40% tax, and this is mostly 20/30k away from the sell point.
They rarely pay though which is retarded, just try and get away somehow, and end up losing the full 50m, almost every time.
Either put up with paying the pirate, or use the jump holes in high traffic systems. If a demand is unreasonable, file a sanction. I filed one as I witnessed another lolwut pirate demanding 15 million from an empty 5K (one of the CrazyTraders), his RP was something like "15 mil, 20 seconds, die", then he attacked me and my friend without a word, got me to 5% hull, then RP "i dont like pirate in my area, you die" (I was in a Behemoth).
This guy's ship is now in Bastille with no guns (and he had a Rogue Destroyer hahaha)... So don't just ignore it, if someone makes a ridiculous demand, report it, if lolwuts start seeing loads of sanction notices for unreasonable demands, they'll think twice. (and we all read the sanction threads right? )

I hope you realize the reason they do this, right?
Haulers tend to buy ore from miners. You tax them as if they mined those 5k themselves. But in reality, they paid 25mil to the miner, in order to get a 50mil amount of ore to sell it for a profit of 25million.
And you demand 20 million from them.
In that case, it does not matter if they pay you 20mil and then go sell it off for 0 profit, not to mention, you might not be the only pirate on the route they are taking. It is only normal that in last ditch attempt they will try and escape to get those 25million.
They lose either way. It is not profitable for them to pay you. They almost always will try and flee, at least TRY to get some sort of profit out of it.
See the problem here? You might think that you are asking 40% of the profit. In reality, most ore haulers are simply buying ore from miners and you end up asking 100% of their profit from them. Of course they won't pay you.
EDIT: Obviously, this only works if the 5k of ore they are hauling are actually theirs. Mined up by them and now being shipped by them. Then yes. They might pay.

Buy price is none of my concern, they have 50 million worth of cargo on them now, I don't care how much they paid for it.
If I'm pirating in a Ptrans - I can sell the ore myself for 30 million profit (as a Junker), so I'm not losing out, even a pirate can dock on the Junker base in New Berlin and sell Gold Ore for around 4000 per unit.
If they don't pay, they're 50 million down, yeah they never made any profit, but so what, don't use the lanes/gates if you don't want to meet pirates.
I did not ask your personal reasons for doing this or that.
You stated that it is retarded. I simply replied that it is only understandable not to pay someone 100% of the cargos worth. Nothing more, nothing less.

Oh yeah, well I guess it's not retarded really, just seems a little illogical to me, to risk losing 50M for the sake of a 20M tax (when they know this is the last lane on the route), I'll probably lower that anyway, especially when I'm in a non-transport.
If they escape 20% of the time, maths n crap says they only make 10M on average per escape attempt, less than the fine.
They would have to make a successful escape more than 40% of the time for it to be a sound business decision, not going to happen unless they have an escort, (or even better, a scout, then they don't have to come into contact with pirates at all).
