I guess I need to try that restart, right now i'm using a junker ID on a serenity and trying to get fairly neutral rep, but either liberty or the rogues hate my guts and no amount of xeno killing seems to be helping.
I think you should give a go to the Serenity and the BWT, both are quite handy, maneuverable, and somehow lowprofile enough to feel like a smuggler ship.
I had both on its time and both felt quite nice for the job.
If you want some weird humor, read down, otherwise... ignore the last block of text. :B

Liberty Dreadnought, I'll give you reasons to show it fits your needs.
Quote:1. The ship cannot be too big or small. Needs to have some concept of interior room, I'm not sleeping in the cargo bay. Similarly, cannot be too large, as I dont want to have to go hire up a hundred blokes just to crew it.
Liberty ships never are big enough, liberty capfleets never are numerous enough.
Quote:2. The ship must be available for open use. I'm not joining a faction, kinda goes against the idea of being a privateer/indy spacer.
Tag your cute cap LNS-*namehere*
LNS seems to stand for Liberalized Nonfactional Spaceship
Quote:3. As mentioned above, I'm a privateer/indy spacer of sorts. Think opportunistic smuggler, scavenger, plunderer, mercenary, freelancer, courier, trader, and even the occasional act of pie-racy.
Nothing better than ramming through the landscape, enemies, police, other navy ships und rheinlends!!
Quote:4. Needs some semblance of cargo space, I like to make a living off material vices, whether they be shot, snorted, or enjoyed as horizontal refreshments between the synthsheets.
If you don't equip armor upgrades, the cap will have nice cargo space for nice trade.
Quote:5. Needs to have a fairly sleek look, not too rusty but not overly high tech. I want a ship that you could see an individual mercenary with a smallish crew using for the odd job. I want an intimidating profile, but something you could show up to a starship show in without terrorizing the little starfliers.
I am pretty sure that the libertonian fleets... I mean... the Liberalized Nonfactional Spaceship fleets are mostly automated! Too many ships for being actually handled by human beings... Intimidating profile? It's a capital ship!!!
You cannot terrorize starfliers anymore, as they don't seem to exist anymore I think... problem covered!
Quote:6. Obviously it'll need some kind of defensability. I'm not flying an unarmed ship into the depths of reaver-infested space, at least give me a window to shoot a handgun out of. Ideally, enough firepower to deter the odd pie-rat that might think to get the better of me.
Step 5 covers 6 somehow. Its intimidating profile will be your ships defensability, if that's not enough, you have more than enough armor and weaponry to fend off the ocassional pirate!
It's got great survivability - since it can hold its own against any one bomber, fighter, or other freighter, and have the engine speed and maneuverability to outrun most other ships.
It's got great firepower - it can kill any heavy transport on its own given enough time, and can take down some lighter transports - and it can (with minimal backup) stand toe to toe against gunboats, and can contribute to whatever side of battle it joins as either a non-negligible amount of damage dealing.
It's neither too large to require lots of crew, nor too small - since it's the largest of the freighters.

-The ship model looks a little too big for what my character would use. It's clearly got several large decks and window sets
-If it's anything like the original modelm, it can probably only fire 4 turrets forward and 4 backwards, which makes for low concentration of firepower
I always imagined it is somewhat around the size as the Firefly was in the series and film, but my advice would be to go SP and try it out, compare it's size to other stuff.
I just got a BWT (and got chased out of Cortez doing so), and so far it's pretty nice. Haven't (yet) been successfully destroyed by a pirate, but they did scratch the paint a bit.
Easily defendable
good profile, acceptable maneuverability
liners count as transports, and it is useable with FL ID
good cargo space
Liner, so obviouisly, interiors will have lots of space.
