Truth be told, I was going to make a report to the staff about you, Jonny.
While you help newbies and are more active than any Angel on the server and the idea you have is right, you are in fact - a terrible example to the new players. Your lack of self restraint is frequently exposed with line upon line of //READ RULEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS in system chat whenever something ends up killing you.
I have interacted with you on my pirates, both Jonny and the Helper. You need to change what you take as an example for new players. Every single encounter I had with you over my presence in Liberty has been an eye-rolling wreck. From constant harassment that a Pirate IDed character is using a Freelancer IFF and how it is against the rules, to how a Xeno IDed caracter does not have an IFF at all. You seem to PM every single unlawful player to try and keep them away from the system SOMEHOW and then up wondering why are you under so much attention?
It is because people have had it with your nonsense. You need to take a step back and look at what your actions actually show to newbies. Also, I do not buy it. You seem to have a grude against any unlawful player, your actions already show this. I was told in the past (A year ago) by a newbie that they were outright told by you that interacting with pirates is not an option and that they should either remain silent or avoid interaction. And considering your behavior on the Helper, it takes very little second thought about how valid those words are.
Do us all a favor and keep away from Penny.
Teaching newbies is a delicate job with very little room for mistakes. At least leave it to a dedicated faction that can be controlled by the staff if needed.

I certainly would preach such a thing. Where are the new players like me going to learn to roleplay? Hell, I still don't really know how to do it well here, even with hundreds of hours of roleplay gaming and other such things, because it's quite different here.
I'd say Pennsylvania is a good place to try to start. But that means the pirates are also going to have to TEACH. Not just assume that anyone they accost is a vet player who already knows how to RP. If you're not good enough at RP to be able to teach others how to do it "right", maybe those people should be encouraged to stay out of Pennsylvania? Same goes for experienced traders getting accosted by newbie pirates, although I'm guessing that's less common since it takes money to become a pirate, and newbies have a distinct lack such such funds.
No, I have zero idea how one would go about enforcing any such suggestion. Even having a cloaked battleship handy to enforce things wouldn't work, since if a trader dies they lose their cargo and all the time and effort that went into putting it together, but pirates have nothing to lose. If they die they just respawn and keep going with zero loss as far as I can see.

Again using situations YEARS ago???.... you already posted that about "//READ RULLLEESSSS" month ago... you already posted that about Pirate ID+Freelancer IFF YEARS ago... and everyone (Pennsylvania players) my first words to newbies about being RED or GREEN.... "NOT all Freelancers are friendly, its very common to use Pirate ID+Freelancer IFF".
STOP USING OLD SITUATIONS MATE.....
Ask newbies in Pennsylvania (and not only newbies...)
A lot of times... you will can read "EJECTION!!!" when i die... and others can confirm my privates about "GREAT BATTLE!!" when i die.... hehehehe. BE PRESENT, let the past be past mate... check dates.
and again... ALSO PIRATES/ROGUES/LANE HACKERS,... can confirm when the event is fair ... is fair and dot (mostly times). Check dates again about your accusations...
I NEVER SAID "interacting with pirates is not an option and that they should either remain silent or avoid interaction" if someone told you that is Lie...
I encountered you few days ago in that huge convoy of yours. CDed you and started typing my roleplay. And you just docked with Trade Lane.
While it is my fault for failing to disrupt lane, my experience with you will only lead to less roleplay next time, because otherwise you might escape.
So you can see how I don't buy that "preching fairness" towards pirates.

If you are in a street, and you see someone with a knife in the hand... do you will wait for him? LOL
I remember that convoy... was a good one (thanks pilots!).... I remember was arriving New York...
First: We has hired some escorts... specifically for messing with pirates in our route and not need to pay any taxe (the escort will have to do their job, its their FUNNY part of the convoy)
Second: I remember, one of our escort was Interacting with you... but you just ignoring him and concentrated ONLY in me... interesting personal stuff
Third: If I need to pay to all our escorts, paying the miners in Kusari and also paying the pirates.... for what the hell im moving outside from Pennyslvania? I will earn more there sending 50% to the miner without messing with escorts or pirates in middle of the route,...not mentioning the wasted time on the trip....
I see... all unlawful point of view is, If the lawful see a pirate at 14k... wait the pirate comes from there... exchange 2 or 3 lines and leave him to steal your money, doesnt matter if you spended long time for earn it...
Less RolePlaying? that would be just shouting "Engage!" (i think i readed something about "Engage" or "Halt!"....in orange text also... not sure LOL)
Sorry If you fail to disrupt the TradeLane... if you didnt Fail and you stop me... i can promise you I will pay the taxe... as I already did several times...
Here we are talking about newbies in Pennsylvania... not mess with other personal histories because you hate me...
I do not hate you. But you show a poor sportsmanship to those newbies you like to teach. You fly unarmored Mastodon. That says a lot about you as a trader. Any self respecting roleplayer trader will use an armor of some sorts. 15 units of cargo is insignificant to profits, while 2.5x armor is significant to survival.
You don't understand how majority of pirates operate. many of us pirate for the thrill and roleplay. Someone has to be the bad guy so that universe is filled with all sorts of types. Sometimes I camp Jump Gates for an hour only to encounter silent trader with no armor who would rather spend five minutes of trying to cruise away than saying something back.
It was your choice to flee while it was my choice to attempt roleplay. You succeded to do so while I was typing letters into the chat to provide roleplay to the best of my ability. But you can't say that it is personal when it is just roleplay. You flew under the DSE colors, something that my character extorts on daily basis due to roleplay reasons.
You have no clue about roleplay and out of roleplay differences it seems. And a bad teacher teaches bad things to pupils. I have a very active trade ship that I fly almost daily. And I don't mind meeting pirates. Actually, I would like to meet more pirates sometimes.

About unarmored, your right, i has not armor upgrade, but usually i have... in our group channel (convoy members can confirm) i said "damit, i forget my shield upgrade"... usually I not use it because im in Pennsylvania...
About i was cruising, of course... my escort was attempting to interact with you without effect, for that is why i hired him, we was interacting inside our convoy already.
About teaching newbies... im teaching IN PENNSYLVANIA, not doing convoys... in convoy i leave others to lead and giving orders... maybe coincidence when you are present we are busy with other stuff...
About no clue about rolePlaying... then i dont understand why i have several messages about "Thanks for good Roleplaying!"
Again, here we are discusing about newbies in Pennsylvania, not my personal convoys
(03-26-2016, 04:59 PM)driftwolf Wrote: For starters, a small introduction. I've had two pirate interactions so far playing this mod:
First one I was mining in Pennsylvania using the cheapest available freighter (as the beginner guide suggests) and someone came up and demanded I drop all my cargo. I'd just spent a lot of real, irreplaceable time collecting that cargo in my tiny little freighter, and they wanted it ALL? It was properly RP'd, sure, something about the field being claimed by their faction so they were interdicting it to others. They destroyed me. At this point I left the game and didn't come back for a very, very long time. Was not a positive first experience. At all. [...]
Second one was yesterday. I came back (obviously) because Freelancer is STILL the best space game out there (which is really sad when I think about it). This time I was trundling towards a jump gate when pirate fires on me just before I reach the gate. The only thing they said AFTER they'd fired and just as the gate cycled was "stop", My previous interaction with pirates led me to try to run - no chance, of course, because the types of transport ships that a newbie freelancer can afford will ALWAYS LOSE to anyone. At least they were "reasonable" with their demands this time, but the interaction was less than enjoyable. For everyone involved, probably.
I would really love to say: mate, that was just bad luck.
But: it was not.
There are dozens of players that just love what they have read here and they would comment with phrases of "delicious tears" and "Disco is running on crystalized madness", throw a few memes your way when you rage on local and sanction you for it later on for the delicious double strike, etc.
Your feedback would be named "QQ" by those, and the wise sentence "step up your game" or "deal with it" would follow at some point.
That's not the attitude of a majority, but of a significant part. It consists partly out of often disgruntled, bored and bitter veterans of this game who own hundreds of ships everywhere and the skill to use them.
You will (as a newbie who is alone) always lose to them.
Quote:So if you're at all interested in making things enjoyable for others, not just for yourself, do try to keep that mind.
Problem found. Few on Disco actually actively aim for "making things enjoyable".
Most players only have a rudimentary idea of roleplay and that it is more than a pretext to a blue message, or that roleplay can be more than the shallow interaction that is driven by ID rules and narrowly confined inside these.
Quote:Unfortunately for this newbie, a combination of high ping and low motor skills means that any kind of PvP is probably out of the question. So once I (eventually) get enough cash to do "something else", I'm actually kind of wondering what that might be since it seems the focus of everything is PvP of some kind. But that's another topic.
I have been flying for ~6 years, I am still bad in duels, and only managed to become acceptable in group fighting. What I found good in this game is the "real roleplay" factor and the chance to "do something creative together with others". This has kept me around Disco. Perhaps this can also be a recipe for you.
You however need to stop playing solo fast because all you will be getting is bad experience, from the perspective of the constant loser who has no chance against the very visible bullies and idiots in this game. Once you have people to play with, and the knowledge that multiplies with it, you will find more roleplay, more positive interactions, more money, more ships... etc... you'll be a "full member" much faster, and less often a punching bag that asks himself: "... why exactly am I doing this?"
Good luck.

you did the same to me? What is wrong with using the lane.
