I trade. A LOT. In fact, a hell of a lot. I raised the cash for the Faction post, and all the cash for the guns, ships, armour, shields etc etc for over 20 players, BY MYSELF (over 2bn last time i cast an eye over the WT accounts), and I did it all in role-play, sans NB-NT run. However, I get pirated very little. I welcome the occasions when I do get caught, because either:
  1. I've been caught napping
  2. Its a new indy pirate i've not met yet
  3. I'm too cheap to hire escorts unless ABSOLUTELY necessary
  4. No escorts are available at the time
  5. The pirate logged on in a system in front of me, and I didn't check the chat-list (you just can't do it everytime someone logs on - you'd crash into every solar out there)
I have always thought - If you're getting pirated, you're not doing it right. Same goes for smuggling too.

Fozzie, if you need some Hints, Tips and Advice on trading your way to 2Bn, send me a PM.

Well ... there'd be a lot more escorts if the major lawful factions would stop initiating merc bans. After all ... its the mercs that are supposed to be doing most of the escorting.

Indeed, this coupled with the fact that Bounty Hunters feel they can no longer safetly accept escort jobs, means that there simply are not the people out there to provide the escorts...

On the other side of the coin, there wouldn't be Merc bans if certain Mercs wouldn't have portended friendship with the lawfuls and then shot them in the back. Liberty has a current Merc sign up that seems to be working. Go and register today....

Just don't escort in a battleship, thats all.

Well ... you cannot just eliminate an entire group because of a few idiots. A better way to deal with those type mercs is to place bounties on them. Wouldn't it be better to role play a bounty on those who break the law (or break contracts)? Wouldn't it give Bounty Hunters something to do ... where they can actually make money for their profession?

Bounties on unlawful mercs make for better role play than a merc ban. I have yet to see a ban on indies bearing police or navy ID's that ignore [LN] orders and that even attack fellow lawfuls.

Lets try something else besides merc bans. [RANT] I've stated this many times ... my merc, Baltar, was a lawful merc who was dedicated exclusively to escorting traders. BUT ... because a VERY small minority among mercs decided to be idiots ... EVERY flipping merc (including mine) was killed on sight. New York is the busiest system ... part of the reason is that a large number of traders come and go from there ... especially the new guys trying to get started. But what do the new guys get? They get to see mercs destroyed as if they were unlawful ... yeah ... good role play for the new guys. [/RANT]

Quote:Just don't escort in a battleship, thats all.

Mercenaries are not allowed to have anything bigger than a gunboat. So if you see someone escorting a trader in a battleship ... its probably a bounty hunter who's not getting paid to take out the unlawful mercenaries.

Yaknow, I actually turned my merc unlawful after getting rebuffed by Liberty forces...and I was only gonna look for traders to escort...

...But this is't the place to discuss merc bans and the general feeling of mistrust towards mercs...it's a place to discuss...something...

Well ... this thread started out as an anti-pirate trial by forum.

I'm attempting to hijack it.

EDIT: At least till it gets locked.

Do this to me ... you'll find you'll use up all your bats/bots and end up sitting there with a thread of hull before making my demands. Yes ... we can do that ... read the rules and you'll find we can "do as much damage but cannot destroy you without making a demand." So even if I did let you go ... you'd end up hobbling along and paying for repairs and a new batch of bats/bots. Considering I only ask for 500k ... you'll end up paying more in repairs.
Now that's not true. Likely they will just get blown up every time they try to run. As it was said so eloquently, "And that's when you realise all my combat keys are bound to mouse buttons..."

This. Merc bans for backstabbing are more of 'banning everyone for bad RP of an Individual.' It doesn't change the fools to make them do things right, and hurts the people who RP.

You hit the nail on the head ... just like gun bans in major cities in the USA ... it doesn't get rid of the bad guys ... it just turns good guys into bad guys.

The bad mercs are still gonna be bad mercs ... all these bans do is create more bad mercs.
