The hell with their grammar, what I want to know is why a Corsair faction is calling itself the Hispan(choose one: ian, ia, ic, oid, your mom) Armed Forces when in fact they abandoned the Sleeper Ship Hispania and stole all her shuttlecraft...

Classy, real classy. Welcome to an intellectual discussion. If you don't know how to address people properly just ask - some might find the time and energy to try to reverse irreversible and teach you some manners.

Things got derailed, anyway, so... That response resolves the question of the name not exactly checking out RP-wise just how?

The sleeper ship saved our lives and brought us to Sirius. If it wasn't for it we wouldn't be here. All of us pay due respect to the ship for that. I never heard an 'Sair saying something bad or disrespectful about Hispania.

Nor I ever heard anybody questioning a name of an faction, at least not much as this one. Everybody have an right to be called whatever they want as long it doesn't harm anybody else.

The answer that came is the way it is because an person that believes that name Hispanyourmom Armored Forces could be an option does not deserve a better one. Unless you think ''your mom'' is RP-wise.

So...if one makes a typo, it is construed as racism, now? Let me go find that screen where "Bretonian" was spelled "Bretonoian", "Betnian"...

People make mistakes when typing things, accept it, move on, assume they meant to type what the actual word is...is it really that hard?

Please do not give an non-existing meaning to my comments and topic. Everybody here talk about typos and similar situations like grammar mistakes.
Simply, there were events that made us realize that some players don't know the exact name of the faction and I thought I'd make it easy for everybody if it was clarified. Is that so hard to understand?

Oh, I placed it in ''General discussions'' section and not the role playing hub. So, save your whatever-it-is-you-want-to-say about HAF RP-wise for another thread. Feel free to make one of your own. It's not that hard.

OKAY!

Settle down.

First off, the adjective form of Hispania is, in fact, Hispanic. English isn't particularly consistent, (plural of mouse is mice, plural of house is houses, etc), don't try to argue with it. "Hispanic _insert_" means "_insert_ from Hispania". From your faction name, it's rather obvious that you're from the Hispania. Thus, you're Hispanic. It's how the language works.

Now, I also realize that in RL, "Hispanic" more commonly refers to people from Latin America than it does to people from the region "Hispania" in Spain. Yes, there actually is a region "Hispania", that's what the ship was named after. Sort of like how the Rheinland was named after the Rhineland region in Germany. Funny, that, Freelancer naming things after real-world places.

If, say, my very-much-underplayed Molly mentions he's from Dublin (fancy that, a Molly from Dublin... about as unlikely as Corsair descended from the sleeper ship Hispania) and someone says something like "Get the Dubliner off me!", is it reasonable to assume that this is, in fact, not an in-character comment, but rather a terrible, vicious attack on the Irish people, as well as an insinuation that my own person is from said region in Ireland, and worse off for it?

Unless it's got "//" in front of it, no, it's not. It's a reference to something I said. Even if it was a little more insulting a la "blasted drunken Dubliner" I highly doubt that the opposing player would be as silly as to assume that since I have a Molly character I am not only from Ireland but also under the influence of alcohol constantly. Rather, it's an in-character racial slur. Read vanilla infocards, they're all over the place. In addition to the Mollies being stereotyped straight from the IRA, Liberty corporate men on Planet New London have rumors about the foppish Bretonians, the Bundschuh "share no more love for Kusari than the rest of Rheinland", the Hogosha regularly attack the "gaijin scum", etc...

Taking offense to "Hispanic" being referred to someone who constantly mentions their relation to the Hispania is roughly akin to taking offense to "Libertonian" being referred to someone who constantly mentions their position in the Liberty Navy.

If you took offense rather to people getting your name wrong... think about how many times your name changed in the past two weeks, or the last time that anyone took offense to something as "major" as a reference to the Orbital Power Gnomes rather than the Omega Pirates Guild... seriously, you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Drop it.

And the rest of you... play nice...

EDIT: Your first post had me believing that you were offended from a perceived racial slur, not that people couldn't get your name right. Mm. If you want people to get your name right, stop changing it, get your whole faction to agree on what to call you, and don't take offense when someone messes up ingame. Your faction's name isn't the only thing to be remembered on this server, if they're close then correct them politely. If the same person messes up repeatedly and responds rudely when you offer a polite correction, THEN you have something to complain about. Barring that, stop whining.

You decided to talk about your name, thus opening it for discussion. I took issue with what I saw as a glaring inconsistency. You called me an *******. Wut nau?

And as I recall most of the Corsairs I meet seem to want to forget about their ancestor's days on Hispania. The Outcasts, on the other hand, remember it very well-we see it every time we fly home (and gives us a great excuse to add 'traitor' to our list of insults for Corsairs, which only adds to the deliciously vicious pre-bloodbath RP, yet another thing I love about the dynamic between our two NPC factions)

Also, I dub this the latest Corsair YANF.

EDIT: CHRIS MAH MAN! Get your butt back up to Corsica.

Also, I don't think they remember the Orbital Power Gnomes. (which wasn't my idea. Blame Dusty)

*Sigh*

The name Hispania comes from Latin language (nothing to do with Latin America) and inconsistencies in English do not apply to Latin, hence the name ''Bretonian'' and not the ''Brittanic'' (as in BAF)

Hispania is not the name of the region in Spain. It was the name that Romans gave to the whole region of Iberian peninsula.

There are Dubliners of all races I suppose and Dubliner does not imply single ethnicity. Differences between the names of the ethnicity, country and region was explained before.

HAF are already sort of pariah faction among Corsairs because we do no pirating but have military, goody-two-shoes RP, etc.
Will it hurt us if we do not neglect our history? I don't think so.

EDIT: Oh and Dublin is the name of the Molly home system is it not? What is offensive about being called after that??

' Wrote:By that logic the correct adjective would be ''Hispanian'', or BAF would be Brittanic.

Don't start me with the linguistics please. This is not the topic about it.

Poor grammar again. Hispanic is the word that should be used. It happens to have a different ending, but the idea is the same.

For instance: It is not the Britain Army, it is the British Army. It is not the Italy Army, it is the Italian <strike>Army</strike> Juventus Supporters Club.
