Id like to add so that Capital ship turrets could be put on "auto", so that they could fire at all angles while the player controls the ship, instead of all turrets fire where ever we point them...
Make it so pirates had to pirate for your cargo. Demanding credits is rather.....not piracy. If it was possible I'd love to see a pirate be able to damage your ship in a way that would drop part of your load.
Alas, I miss piracy from TDZK and only one person here knows what I am speaking of......oddly he is one of the only pirates I rather enjoy being hit by even if he doesn't know he is hitting me. :P
I know you said only one, but I have more than one idea.
1. Make a future disco. Set in the future by a couple hundred years. Then replace Disco USA with the future disco.
2. Have fewer factions to choose from. That way when you join a faction there may be others on to fly around with. Some factions are just non existant.

Perhaps make caps stronger - but not bombers weaker.

But yeah, that and some of this other stuff y'all are saying. Factions and capships and imports. Those dead horses are due for their beatings, after all.
