The death star was killed by a snubfighter. The Executor, Darth V's personal pwnwagon, was killed by a snubfighter suiciding into the bridge.
In RL, we see examples of fighters trumping capitals ranging from Billy Mitchel's first attempts at aerial bombing to Pearl Harbor, the Pacific Carrier War, the sinking of the Yamato, the disabling of the Bismarck and the death of the Scharnhorst.
More recently there's the success of Argentinian Exocets against the Royal Navy in the Falklands war, and the 1987 attack on the USS Stark by an Iraqi Mirage F1.
Simple fact is that capitals are bases for power projection in RP. You might notice that the official factions don't bust out capitals all that often, and there's a reason for that. They're awkward and silly, and have difficulty engaging fighters and bombers.
Caps are not in this game to be personal pwnwagons, which is sadly what they inevitably become under indie control. If your gameplay is being ruined by lolcaps, try moving out of liberty. Rheinland, the Omegas, the Taus, Brettonia... all plenty of fighter activity.
