Ray held the two submachine guns at the two nearest guards.
-Drop your weapons or your boss will be the first, who will receive a nice hole in his body.
Nobody moved.
[color=#CC0000]-Drop it you fools!
Nobody moved.
-I told you to drop you fraking idiots!
The guards lowered their weapons.
-Drop them!
Ray, still aiming at the guards, ran to the package and picked it up.
-Okay, you all stay here and we will let your boss go somewhere.
Lana started to back to the door, covering her body, with the man.
-And what if we're not interested in that ******* at all? Guys, the boss told that it can be sold for hundreds of millions. What do you think about killing them, and we can share the profit. -one of the guards raised his gun.
-How dare you betray me, when I have...-the guard's shot hit the man and practically went through him. Lana was quite fortunate that the man's body slowed down the bullet as it hit her too, but the armour stopped it.
-So, give it to me and maybe...
-What the hell have you done? -started shouting another guard.
The first one raised his gun at the second.
-I have no use for you!
But he was slow. The second guard jumped behind the sofa, where two girls were frozen in their fear. The shots hit one of them on the head and she fall off from the sofa. The other tried to lay down, but she ended up the same way.
Ray pushed over the huge wooden table and ducked behind it. Lana jumped near him. From the covered side there were about five guards, on the other only two, who received one-one burst from Ray's machine guns.
Everyone started shooting at each other, it was a chaos. Only Lana and Ray knew exactly who is the enemy.
Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.
"Okay, I'll admit I didn't see that coming," Lana said casually to Ray as they hid behind the large wooden table.
Bullets, energy bolts and shouts and screams of mean men populated the small room. Occasionally a few rounds would impact the table and splinters of wood showered the two. The muffled sound of loud music could still be heard coming from the exterior, but so could shouts of men - who are no doubt more guards concerned about their former boss. They must have discovered the limp body of the bartender as they pounded the locked door. Both Lana and Ray knew they could not stay in this confined and dangerous room for any longer.
In the midst of chaos and confusion, Lana poked her head out to the side to get a view on the situation. Some of the combatants were wounded but the majority of them were still returning fire at each other behind cover. A stray shot scraped by and Lana recoiled. She worked up the courage and peeked again, this time at her surroundings. She could see a small backdoor in the corner, obviously built for emergency retreat in case the police feel like raiding the den. Too bad the poor bastard won't get to use it - Lana thought.
Lana took the initiative and told Ray, "okay, I'll smoke the place up when they come through. You'll carry the package and we'll both lay down cover fire. Then we're gonna run like hell for that door." She pointed at their escape route.
Ray nodded.
The front door was blasted open and the remaining guards began to pour through. Lana clicked the controls on two smoke grenades and lobbed them towards the hallway one after another. Clouds of thick smog surged from the projectiles.
"Now!"
Lana pointed her pistol in the direction of the hallway and let off a dozen of searing laser energy. Then she got up, turned and ran. Ray followed.
Ray started to run after Lana, the two submachine guns continually spitting the bullets towards the front door.
He almost fell as he bumped into Lana, as the smoke covered the whole room, and he couldn't see his own nose. The door was shut. Lana fired a few on the lock, but with the laser pistol she only heated it up.
Ray pulled her away, and aimed with the submachine gun. The bullets ripped apart the door around the lock. He kicked it open.
-The positive thing about the classic weapons.- He pushed Lana to the back alley and just in time, as a few plasma shots hit the wall just behind them.
Two guards turned in the corner running towards them. Lana pulled Ray down behind a rubbish bin as they started shooting. A flashbang was Ray's answer.
As the two guards dropped on the ground Ray started running towards them readying his laser pistol. Both of them received a nice burned hole into their heads. Shouting could be heard from the street, must be more of the guards. Ray dropped a sensor controlled trap to the door they exited and turned to Lana.
[color=#33CC00]-Which way, my beauty?

"Nice shot," Lana complimented Ray's aim as she looked briefly at the two bodies on the ground in disgust.
Gunfire continued from within the building and echoed in the dark alley where Ray and Lana stood. A stray shot came through the open doorway and shattered a nearby a window. Lana ducked and dragged Ray to the ground. Ray landed on top of Lana's soft body and remained still until Lana gave him a questioning look.
"Oh, sorry, we need to get to lose the heat."Ray said as he pushed himself up.
Lana got up and patted away the dust on her cloak, then replied,"I know a safe-house just outside this district. Let's move."
As she spoke, Lana spotted a hover-cycle parked at the end of the alley. She got to it, hopped on and started its engine with basic hacking. Lana took a helmet from its storage compartment and handed it to Ray at the back.
"Death traps, these things," Lana gave a remark and held the throttle to the vehicle. The hover-cycle produced a high pitched whirr sound and propelled forward.
The duo arrived at Lana's safe-house, situated near one of the sprawling city's remaining green belts. It was a moderately sized single detached house isolated from the rest of its estate and with a generous amount of land. Lana rode the hover-cycle into the parking area and got off. She worked with her holo-com and touched a few controls. The house front door unlocked and the hallway lit up, while the hover-cycle outside slowly sunk into the underground garage by a lowering platform.
"This used to be my boyfriend's," Lana explained as she threw her backpack onto the couch in the living room and walked to the kitchen,"it was kindly given to me after his boss... fired him."
Ray followed and listened, he seemed marveled by his partner's resourcefulness and numerous possessions.
"Drink?" Lana offered Ray a small glass of spirit as she poured her own, then downed it in one gulp, "help yourself to whatever you need, except my guns in the basement of course. I'm heading upstairs to chill."
Ray watched as the girl went upstairs then poured himself a glass of water and walked to the living room. He put the glass down to a small table and lay at the black leather sofa. From the upstairs it could be heard as the water started to gurgle.
Pulling out the tracking device from his pocket and attempted to locate the fourth and fifth crate. One of them was somewhere out of the town, seemed to be safe as the the cloaking system was still on. The other one's was offline. It didn't take long to locate the remaining crate. It was on the other side of the town.
The water flowing has stopped.
-We may have a little problem- shouted Ray to the girl -The package is at the Liberty Police Department.
The girl walked down the stairs with a single towel curled over her body and her still wet hair flowed down on her shoulders. She opened a wardrobe and dropped all the clothes to the ground from it. She pushed a few buttons hid behind and the back of the wardrobe slipped into the wall revealing different clothes of the police, military and who knows what not. She took out a police officer hat, put it up on her head and put the suit in front of her body.
-What do you think?
-You look fantastic as ever. Do you have one for me too or I'll be playing the bad guy?
Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.
Lana put the police uniform down and searched through the extended wardrobe of disguises. Then she took one and showed it to Ray - it was a security systems maintenance worker's uniform, also for the police department.
"Either this," Lana said and took a pair of handcuffs from the police uniform, "or this."
She led Ray down to the basement of the house. Lana pushed open the door and they reached a small cellar containing several racks of wine. She walked over to a shelf at the back, picked the lid off a bottle and pressed its cork. The shelf slid to the side and she was presented to a small palm scan with a keypad embedded in the wall. She put her hand down and entered a code with the other, a small chirp confirmed the authorisation and with a small hiss the wall broke in half to reveal a cache filled with devices capable of raining death on a small city.
"I took a peek at your tracking device and saw the next package safely in the PD's hands," Lana said to Ray as she ran her fingers across her pistol collection, "you better pick something hefty in case our infiltration goes wrong, again."
Lana took out a large gym bag with the police department's logo on it.
"And how do you suppose we get our hands on a cop car?"
-I have an idea, follow me. I saw a jeweler's shop two corners from here.
Grabbing a plasma shotgun and two pistols he went back upstairs. He picked up the maintenance uniform and put it in a bag taken from the wardrobe too. Lana followed him to the street and they started walking towards the shop.
Ray stopped about 20 meters from the shop and told the girl to wait there. He entered the shop and pulled out his pistol.
The shop was a small one with only one camera at one of the corners, one shop assistant and a pair looking at the rings. The bullet hit the camera with definately lethal precision. Not even a single wire survived the shot. It hit the ground with a loud noise, but still it was nothing compared to the sound of the shot itself.
-This is not exactly a robbery. Don't worry no one will be hurt. -Ray saw as the woman behind the desk started nearing to the cash-desk.- Yes, madam, please push that button you wanted.
The woman completely paled.
-No, I'm not joking, please push the button. -told him Ray, but the woman collapsed behind the desk, maybe from the shock.- I have to do everything? Okay, get out of here! Go!
The pair ran out of the shop to the street, and Ray jumped over the desk, pushing the alarm. It started flashing red, indicating that the signal was sent to the police. Next he shot a few bullets into the computer which was connected to the camera. He picked up the memory from the debris and put it into his pockets.
He picked up the security card from the woman on the ground and put a small device to the ground under the desk and left the shop. He walked back to Lana who was sitting on a bench.he sat near her without a word and they waited.
It took three minutes for the police to arrive.
-They're late. -Told Ray as the police car stopped in front of the shop. The two cops entered the shop and Ray ran to the door. He used the security card on the electronical lock and steel bars came down at the shop window and door.
Ray jumped in the car and Lana followed him. The hacking of the computer of the car didn't took more than a few seconds for Ray. The cops were already at the bars with their weapons aimed at their own car. Ray opened out the throttle and the left towards the Police department.
-You're mad. I'm sure they have radios... -Lana waggled her head.
-And I'm sure it will take them a few hours to find my device. Nobody will be able to communicate within a kilometer.
Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.
"Smooth," Lana added, "but you forgot one thing - all of LAPD's second generation patrol cars are now registered and logged through their neural servers, along with their officers."
"Uhm..."
"Don't worry, let me take care of that."
Lana took out a forged ID chip and inserted it into the police car's console. The console returned from sleep mode and prompted log in credentials. She pulled it out and tried again with another chip. This time a beep gave off and the device began its rebooting sequence.
"This is primary controller of sector 12-Y, we've had reports of an armed robbery on 132th New Hollywood Street, over." A voice came through the radio.
Lana minimised the transmission and tapped the reply command.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Ray asked nervously.
"The LAPD is gonna have a fun wild goose chase tonight," Lana smirked, activated the communications unit and spoke, "roger that, this is patrol 32 Alpha. We're on pursuit. Suspects are attempting to escape in a blue van and are heavily armed. Requesting backup, over."
"Received. Dispatching tactical police unit through one to four, over."
Lana released the button on the communicator and exhaled in relief.
The two soon reached the location of the next package. A moderately sized crime lab belonging to the city's police department. It was situated near a park and also functions as a small impound for any items and vehicles the police had seized, from the look of its spacious parking lot full of civilian craft beside it. Ray and Lana's car was stopped at the front gate security check point.
A police officer walked up and gestured Ray to lower his window.
"May I ask why are you driving an official police vehicle, sir?" The officer asked.
"Oh I'm sorry, officer," Lana poked her head towards the window and answered, "Sergeant Amy Adams here."
She reached for her badge and showed it to the young policeman.
"I was injured recently and can't drive for a while. But the administrator here specifically ordered me to get the ventilation systems checked ASAP. So I had to call a friend, who happens to know this kinda stuff, and drive me here. I hope you don't mind." Lana said and winked.
Ray also smiled and nodded to the policeman.
"All right," the officer replied, "but try to drive your own vehicle next time, we gotta go strict on the rules."
-I don't really like being surrounded by that many cops. -pointed Ray at a group of man wearing uniform who were having a break, from what could be seen from the car.
He parked the car and got out. Grabbing the bag with the shotgun from the rear seat he walked to the boot of the car. He put all of the tools he could find into the bag than nodded at Lana, who started walking towards the main building.
[color=#33CC00]-I hope you can identify yourself and me, when they may want to check my bag.
Lana just nodded at him and continued to walk through the groups of policemen towards the building. They stepped in and there was a metal detector with several guards in front of them. Seems like security is very important even between hundreds of policemen.
-Ah...I forgot a device in the car. Please wait me here miss Adams.
Ray exited the building and went back towards the car. But he noticed a smaller building where he couldn't see anyone. He went a circle around the building and saw a man-hole cover to the drainage system. He opened it and hid the shotgun there. When he was putting back the cover a police officer noticed him.
-May I ask what are you doing?
-Umm.. I've just checked something. I'm from the maintenance.
-Sure... -the policeman walked away.
Ray hurried back to Lana. He got through the detector very fast, as in his papers there was the allowance of the pistols. He saw Lana talking with an officer so he went towards her.
-Umm, miss Adams, sorry for interrupting your conversation, but we have a work to be done.
Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.
"Excuse me," Lana said to the officer and smiled. The policeman smiled back and nodded, it appears he enjoyed his short conversation with her.
Lana led Ray to a holo-display nearby, where a daily bulletin was on display. She went around to the back, where a small console was hidden by the display's large stand and signaled Ray. She brought up the root menus of its file system, found and connected her holo-com with it. With a few touches, the plan of the entire building was safely transferred to her device. Lana activated her holo-com and brought up the plans while Ray triangulated the package's approximate location by performing a synchronisation routine with his tracking device.
"Bingo"
The two headed towards the lower section of the compound, offering passing police officers uneasy smiles and awkward nods. So far so good, the news of a stolen police vehicle had not reached the station yet. But Lana knew their time was limited and urged Ray to pick up the pace. As they reached the entrance to the lower crime lab, they hit a security checkpoint. Two officers stood at either side of a reinforced door, which opened to allow a researcher through after he showed them his ID authorisations.
Lana approached them and showed them her badge, then said, "Sergeant Amy Adams, illicit drugs control division. I have authorisation to escort this maintenance engineer to check possible leakage in the ventilation."
"Adams, huh?" The officer said, unconvinced, "I've never heard of a Sergeant Adams in drugs. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to contact HQ to confirm this."
Ray turned and gave Lana a desperate look. Lana nodded and looked at the officer on the right then back at Ray.
"Well, erm," Lana took a step closer to the officer to read his badge, "Gary, is it? I have something to tell you that might change your mind."
Lana reached for her taser in her uniform and zapped the officer, Gary seized up and dropped to the floor. Meanwhile, Ray threw himself at the other one and gave him a left hook before he could react. That officer fought back and tried to block Ray's attacks, before Lana came over and pushed her taser into his chest giving him an electrical discharge. Ray and Lana quickly dragged the bodies into a storage room at the side and opened the door to the labs.
