That is a good question. I would find it fitting that your rep would match the base you own. As the same of those who dock other than yourself.
I'd would guess that it'd be profitable that you have a Freelancer IFF, and ID while creating bases.

Destroying a station takes some effort but building and maintaining a station takes a lot more effort. I would be surprised if a single player could do it by themselves.
So get other players "maintain" aka deliver what is needed to keep running...all you need to be(come) is:

Yes, the stations are permanent unless destroyed.
I should mention that stations will be destroyed automatically after a few days if they run out people, water, food, energy and parts.

You do realize that you could operate your code shop by setting the prices and simply unloading your codes at the station (if you kept the station safe/operational). Maybe that's the best thing with your new hand problem.
