I think you missed the part where you have to give the base money before it can buy things from you.
I disagree with autodamage, But i think it was created to get rid of bases that no one is using so that there aren't systems filled with bases no one uses. So that only the Dedicated base owners that are serious about it can maintain bases. Not someone who's going to build it and stop caring in two days. But it's just a guess. I'm not sure.
I don't have a problem with autodamage. Basically you are just carrying out maintenance.
All complex structures and machinery require maintenance and that's a fact.
What I object to is the massive investment in invulnerability.
If a shield generator requires this much support then it must be incredibly inefficient.
Of course the reason for this has nothing to do with engineering and physics.
Lots of people play this game in their own way and expect to be able to enjoy all aspects of it.
