Zoom is not a "good feature" it takes away a MAJOR part of the game's essence. Aiming and the gaining of that skill.
Transports, Gunboat, and all Capitals can be used to balanced effectiveness WITHOUT zoom if people put in the practice. WITH zoom, it takes away that element, and creates super lulz machines that tons of other players have to gank to deal with. And it makes experienced players in those ships become absolute killing machines that have to be suppressed by sometimes unthinkable amounts of players.
Don't make cap guns "all but impossible to hit small ships" as Loken said, because then smaller ships will be to powerful. Just make it so that people have to learn to AIM in a Flight SHOOTER simulator.
Just fix the arcs, that will make people have to actually fly the ships instead of sitting in Turret View and only moving the reticle. I've been playing TSO a bit and it works fine there--you have to point the front of the ship at your target to do big boy damage. The same thing could be done here by simply fixing turret arcs on heavy slots to 45 degree (or something along those lines). Make people fly the ship and you'll have richer combat again. You dont have to do anything else.
Cloaking is hard to fix, but it could be made irrelevant by forcing it to use energy so that (1) you cant uncloak and core dump, and (2) pulse weaps can prevent you from cloaking during combat. That makes them useless, so some optional equipment to allow you to do it at the expense of something else is also needed, maybe give up guns or something else.
I'm opposed to POBs altogether. Something that puts the emphasis on faction bases instead, would be much better.
I think the OP is just nostaligic for the good old days that werent so great.

The Barge is OP with jumping as money maker killing the whole economy. It took 8-9 months to nerf it and even nerfed it still beats all normal ways to making money. I and one friend made around 300 m per hour(150 m per person) jumping the cryo/iridium trade between delta and langelouc. We used 2 extra fuel supply ships and program to give the coords. It is just wrong, we stopped after few jumps. But there are people that make this continuously for many months by now.
3 Bases
Admins should not allow everyone to make hidden and oorp base. Simply restricting them to the official factions via admin given base builders. The poor official factions are fading away and are less and less in numbers both ships in-game and factions overall.
It kills the oorp base building, oorp base supply, oorp base sieges.
3.1 Be damn harsh to the oorp base abusers- under harsh I does not understand to beam them up in the admin lost battlestar base to buy cloaks for 30 000 credits kill themselves several times to spawn there again and buy more on the price to loose one pathetic cap8.
3.2 Make the bases brutal money sink- allow people to buy their supply if they are too lazy to bring them directly from their POB for insane price. I see 2 B for 1 week supply nice number, also this afer removing the barge nonsense.
4 Barges
Kill this damn oorp overpowered thing with fire. It is ridiculous I sold one for 12 billion.
I guess the group that bought it made the money in 1-2 months, they would return their investment in 1 week using it to jump ores. I deleted the banks later since having so much credits is just wrong.
A very interesting debate going on here. There's a few things I'd like to comment on which I have some experience with and that I wish to clarify. As said in other discussions much of the game is what we the players make of it. Is it valid to get rid of or nerf aspects of the game which some (perhaps many abuse) while the rest are responcible or even use it for very good RP reasons?
I have a few personal examples, and they relate to Govedo's above post. So firstly about barges. For those who don't know we were the ones who purchased your barge for the 12 bil. Many of us weren't happy about paying so high a price but it was the only one on the market at the time. And we managed to negiotiate down from your original proposal of 15 bil I believe.
As for making our money back in 1-2 months Ha! We wish. We do jump with it but rarely. I agree with you that many people do jump trade excesively with them but we don't. You see we didn't buy it to get rich, hell after raising the funds to buy it, we didn't need more cash. We jump with it once sometimes even twice a month, thats it. We never jump with less than 4 players (barge, jumper, fueler, escourt) but prefer more. And we take Ore to NL and return with Ba usually. This makes a total profit of less than 250Mil and that is divided up between all players and some to the faction. So it's not all that profitable individually for those involved. The reasons that we do this is for fun and RP reasons. As our faction is a minng group that operates almost exclusively out of Alberta, you can imagine that there is only so many activities to do. We use the barge to bring a bit of diversity and keep our members interested. Even when we first bought it, we never even expected to earn back the money we invested into it. at the current rate it'll take a couple of years to make that cash back. But it's all worth it because we bought an exciting new set of of opertunities for ourgrowing membership to take part in.
I take great pride in our RP and I'm always doing my best to improve on it. Powertrading is not something we encourage. However we're probably in the minority. While I'm sure other groups and factions are very good with their barge use I admit that many do soley use it for the real money making routes and thats it. However I don't think this should necessarily lead to more nerfs that harm the good work we're trying to do. I hope that other users would follow the examples of ourselves and other factions who operate similiarly.
As for bases, I do think that some sort of admin permission might be something worth looking into. Many lolwut bases appear to severly harm server roleplay and player activities. But as for what standards should be set andd who would police it, well thats hard to decide. Admins have enough on their plate as it is to be dealing with bases regulating. And making it similiar to SRP i think would be too hard a standard to expect from most people.
As for your opinions on what bases should cost to run, I think thats pretty outrageous. 2 Bil a week! No-one has that kind of money, and to get it you'd need to powertrade like nothing else. I suspect you've never operated a base yourself? It's lot of work. However, bases in core systems, near planets that sell Ba etc are of course much easier in their nature to maintain that those far away. If such measures were put in place, no-one would ever even consider building a base in far away systems. Instead Liberty and no doubt the other houses would just get flodded with more bases.
Hmm well I hope I didn't come across as full of myself. Just wanted to give everyone an insight into how we run things. In particular how barges are not all bad.
Btw govedo, deleting those chars we spent ages earning the money for was a waste in my opinion, but admirable nonetheless, most greedy people here would just love that. If you didn't want to give any back (which of course there was no reason to) I'd have suggested you could have made a multi-billion donation to groups like the Angels. You'd of been revered for all eternity for your commitment and generosity towards helping new players! But oh well.
Angels are overrated, people donate money to them since 4-5 years and yet the majority of new players behavior is not changed at all. I really doubt that all that donations made by the whole community in this time were given to the new players really.
Also point 3.2 adds moneysink if the players are lazy/cannot supply their base for a bit they could buy the base supply from the POB for a lot of money in order to create moneysink. I have huge base experience based on creating 2 bases and destroying around 10.
Since you are kinda new around you cannot get what OP said. It is rare to participate in nice 10-20 people snub melee nowadays together with 20 min waiting to join the 196/196 server evenings, credits are damn easy to make and have no real worth now after 5 major flaws- first was the cau8 bug, second was the money transfer bug, then was the 4 .86 trade income increment non-sense together with the fourth non-sense-mining at every spot in Sirius that promotes the lack of interaction and the 5th- the barge powerjumping options. Discovery needs more moneysinks.
I checked the comm channel and saw 2 IC official tagged barges buying cryos from gallia, I mean wtf if this is RP....
In 2009 Hoodlum would delete the said ships only based on the screens in comm channel and give warning to the faction.
Nowadays factions do absurd and idiotic alliances based on lampoon and self serving RP ignoring their core RP and doing OORP alliances and agreements.

Caps a problem? double nova torpedo damage- this doesn't affect their anti snub value, as they are already instantly cpapble of taking out shields or hulls on a lucky hit. Instantly, snub supremacy is restored.
As to TS itself? Yes, it reduces the skill required, but I do not believe (especially transports, who benefit the most from increased point suppression) that it makes capitals overpowered. 2 or three bombers and your capital ship is a pile of scrap. Heh, its my favorite part of PvP.
Cloaks and jumps are a problem though, and barges should be made of tinfoil.
Im penniless, rotten in a fight, and have authority issues, but im back!
simply we need more bans for players who dont give a frak about rules (PVP rules)
so without them game will balance itself.
Maybe also caps only official factions .....
