I use the death of close friends or family as a way to tell where they came from any why they are where they are now.
In my most recent character background, both parents of the character died in a mining accident.
Gave just cause for my character to become reclusive and ditch the area.
Lets see...my first character bio ever on the forums involved an orphan, where the parents ditched my character on a merchant ship when he was an infant.
In my application to join KNF, i said that friends and family of the character had been killed off by Blood Dragons, GC, and BAF. I wanted a pissed off lawful type, as all of my others are friendly and kind.
Family and friends dying off just makes the story easier to start, i think.
Though...in light of this new information about it's over-usage, i'll probably avoid it for my next bit of writing.
Edit:
Oh, my hacker.
Parents had their home seized by the Liberty Police, and...i forget if i clarified after that.
Allowed my character and his brother to have a reason to leave Manhattan with a grudge.
Personally, I think it makes for a good bit of cause for a person to be out in space killing people. No annoying calls from parents about your chosen profession (Think of the Meet the Sniper video)
Funny you mention this, cawd0r, because that's one of the first details I've observed when I thought of Hans' story. I mean, you hardly ever see adventure stories starting with mom packing lunch for his kid before he goes out to kill monsters. Hans has both parents living. Ranov'la also has living parents, though I never really thought much about his mother. My trader has both parents dead, but they died of old age. Other characters of mine are just too old to have living parents.
My take is that this comes from lazy mid 80's computer game style adventure stories. It's hard to justify someone leaving a good house to go outside and roam the world killing everything. It's difficult to imagine a free adventurer having strings attached to home. This is somewhat why the main character almost always have romantic difficulties and ends up only hooking up with the damsel at the end of the story. Otherwise it puts too much responsibility in the hands of someone who should be free to go about and explore. How can you justify a father not coming back home at the end of the day to put his kids to sleep or be with his wife.
Now that I have to check applications for two factions I must admit it bothers me somewhat whenever I see the, "parents dead, revenge lust" variety stories.
William "Knucklehead" Modnar is Eman Modnar's father, surrogate father to Airom Artnam, and potential father-in-law to Ulora Renault. (Not sure if I'm going to pursue this last one.)
Mrs. Modnar is alive and well on Manhattan. She does come out on some of Knucklehead's trips, but lately he hasn't found much reason to leave.
Airom's father was killed by The Wild after the nomad war, when he was attempting to rejoin the Rheinland Military. Airom's mother has since moved back to New Berlin and is proud to have her son follow in her husband's footsteps.
It's not clear what became of Ulora's parents. She doesn't like to talk about them much.
So, yeah, out of 8 parents, 2 are likely dead of natural causes (Knucklehead's parents), 3 are known to be alive and well, 1 was killed by The Wild, and 2 are unknown/yet to be seen.
Yue Fei doesn't know the wereabout of her parents since she was adopted at a young age.
Isabelle only has her father still alive.
Xing' parents never actually died.
All my characters have parents, I just never mention then.

P.S. Yeah, he has a point, I think we're all cylons in the game...where's the rez ship?!
You fear oblivion. Yet you forget. The universe remembers every atom of your being. Even dust hums your name in the dark. Roleplay is dead. Long live Powertraders and PvP I guess.
I've had characters that have problems with their parents, characters who have had other relatives die violently, characters with chronically ill relatives, and characters whose parents were almost killed but for random chance, but none who have dead parents short of age-related reasons.
Parents just never come up in my RP, with the exception of Nathan Black (Evan and Lloyd's father) since he's also actively flying. Either the parents have a generic uneventful life, or the parents and the character in question aren't on speaking terms; either way, I have no reason to bring them up usually.
