Yes but there is a distinction between "freedom from" and "freedom for"

For some of us, the least amount of government interference in our lives is akin to being more free. The more there is government involvement in telling us what to say, how to act and what to do, the less freedom there is. So...from that aspect I agree heartily with him, the internet is one of the last true bastions of the free, with the ability to have your say with a certain amount of anonymity that provides a blanket of protection from the government.

Who else do you really require 'freedom of speech' from other than your government? If your government gets to tell you what's considered 'free speech' and what's considered 'hate speech' you're already half way down the road to tyranny.

Freedom of speech is a good thing. It allows us as humans to become everything we were meant to be without the government or anyone else trying to curtail that. This is "freedom from".....Freedom from oppression, tyranny, and unjust persecution. This is something to which we are all entitled.

Some believe that freedom simply means being able to do whatever I want to do as an individual regardless of how it affects other individuals. This is "freedom for" This beliefs also cries out that any attempt to stop me from doing anything that makes me happy is bad.

You see, I'm not saying that freedom of speech is bad in any way. There is however an important distinction to be made in the way we view freedom. These are two very different things.

Well, apparently Anonymous is making it political.

They've shut down the DOJ, MPAA, FBI, Universal, and a crap load of people in apparent retaliation for the MUL shutdown.

It's the same as Youtube or any video hosting platform - they aren't responsible for the content.

Megaupload is an odd one though - as it had support from musical artists and celebrities, which it supposedly hurts.

And lets be honest, Piracy doesn't actually hurt the movie or tv industry, it acts as more of an advertisement. For example - I watched several episodes of House M.D online (on megavideo in fact), it then led me to purchase the first three seasons (second hand admittedly). I watched Flight of the Conchords online, I asked for it for Christmas (two people bought it for me actually by accident).

If you watch something online and like it, you're more likely to buy it. You aren't going to pay money for something you aren't sure if you'll like or not.

Yeah, how smart was that? They went from being a pain in Hollywood's backside to terrorists. Now they aren't just the problem of the entertainment industry and the US government has much more motive to hunt them down with a vengeance. I guess they are pretty confident that they can remain hidden and they may be right. I guess time will tell.
