For me, I believe this leads to metagaming and no real loyalty. This also may be a foundational reason why really feal RP here is so weak.

If a person has an IC, Corsair, Rheinland, Gallic and Blood Dragon, there may be enough spread to keep the love focused. If they have an Order, Corsair, SCRA, Bounty Hunter, Kusari, Mollys, BAF, LNS and RNC characters, yea. Sure you'll get a tinge when your friend dies but shed crocodile tears when you're on the other side killing him. At that point, a player is what I was told is a Factionlancer. The player plays to have the varity and the pvp, play a part in what ever 5 line RP exists, then switch to do it again.

For me, I just can't pirate. I tried, and I feel bad when I did it. I was like Sammy the sad shark. Yea I tore you to bits, but I felt really bad about it later. That pretty much limits me to be a "good" guy.

Im sorry but i dont agree with you. If someone is attached to 3-4 faction it doesnt mean he love all of them equal. When i used to play as corsairs( not playing now for lag issue ) i planned attack or raidng parties with my oc or bhg friend so we can have a big good fight. When they plan a raid they talk to us but they never told or expect to play on thier side, they only call me when attacked by others except sairs.
So basically we have fun, plenty of fun in disco.

Your deduction has one major flaw. You assume that character=player.

I might be a friend with someone but that doesn't mean I won't ally with a guy I don't like playing the same faction and give my friend's character a hard time if he happens to be playing an enemy faction.

To your second point, we are limited by number of players, not characters. A player can only be playing one character at the time regardless of how many characters he has.

Actually, more characters encourage RP as people can easily switch characters and go play where other people are instead of being stuck in an area where nothing is happening at the time.

it's even more fun to shoot at your friends than to shoot alongside them

Now Now that wasnt a "my way or the highway," comment and I doubt any one comment applys for everyone. But I do stress its a powerful reason why people choose PVP combat for their Roleplay rather than being surrounded and RPing out a lower cost or just different terms.

I want you to notice that every part of the Roleplay you're reffering to directly ends in "a big good fight" or "When they plan a good raid." Generally involves a battle as an end result. Now before you -flip out- listen to me. We're playing a game with small and huge ships of different flavors in outerspace. Combat will happen. The problem is we cant walk around the ship, in game, and interact with people, we come here.

So in game we need to restrain ourselves from going 99 red ballons go by! That means launching an attack when you should just be watching the event transpire.

My -PERSONAL- conclusion is, the fewer ships you have, the more RP, outside of pvp, -IN GAME- you will be more willing to have.

Someone once told me it seems the larger ship you have, the less you're willing to Roleplay. Now if you have have tons of big ships, with many characters well, when's the next big battle guys?

We all may have examples to the contrary but the norm still relates back to the topic of the thread. Too many characters on all sides of the fence leads to too much metagaming and lack of genuine suprise when something happens.

I told someone if they are my enemy one day and my best ally the next, for god sakes dont tell me. Now that I think of that, perhaps the problem is -not- having too many characters but rather not being able to roleplay so many characers. I simply cannot rp a badguy. Yet people take the anti-hero approach to all their characters. That doesnt work. You dont give Captain Kirk the personality of Ash Williams. Both are great characters but only if they remain seperate. Not many can do that very well.

I have

My BIS
My IND
MY Rogue
My BAF
My Indy pirate
My Xeno

That's it.
Baf has 4 ships
BIS has none
IND has 3 ships (all flown by different characters)
Xeno has 4 ships
Rogue has 2 ships
Indy pirate has 1 ship

I have access to literally tens of shared ships though
