I like playing as TAZ because the RP is interesting, and always provokes some amusing encounters. i stay away from normal zonerdom because, zonerzonerzoner and the resultant anti-zoner attitudes of some.
I mean, how much can you explore? In all due seriousness. Sure, I've had my fair-share of a Zonerzonerzonerzoner time, exploring and site-seeing around Diso universe, but once that was over, there was basically nothing left to do with it.
You can use them to trade inside the houses, and what can you do with the battleship? Fly around and shoot K'hara? Oh wait.
Also, regarding the topic that Scumbag rose up - I mostly find Zoners alive out of necessity. Sirius need these neutral places as spots where diplomacy can occur between hostile parties, so, they are tolerated by their neighbors.
For example, why would BAF let Zoners have their FP at Omega-3? What's the reason for that? I mean, Zoners can't have an implication big enough on their economy to let them stay, and they harbor hostiles to Bretonia without even denying it. It's just that Bretonia has interest to let the freeport to stick around. For example, if there would be a crisis between them to Rheinland - where would they meet up? At a completely neutral place - the freeport.
So, the TL;DR - Freeports are there out of grace of bigger forces that need them when said bigger forces are in conflict with one anther.
Corsairs and Hessians aren't powerful enough to fend off a Navy in a head-on battle. Otherwise the colonization of Sprague wouldn't be possible. Regardless, no one ever talked about "capturing the whole system" (which they are fully capable of, should they wish to), just taking out the Freeport. Which is more than possible if Bretonia would wish to (hint: They don't)
I sold my only Zoner ship (that small cruiser cap whose name I forgot) quite a while ago. I made it to fight in the inter-Zoner conflicts around Omicron-something, bases, etc. Was good fun popping AIs, Order and random people there on Zoner ID, but when the war ceased, there was nothing to do.
So ye, I agree with many here who say that there is not enough conflict for Zoner-IDs to make it interesting for me.

FP1 fit into the "wild O3" perfectly. The setup displayed a rough Borderworld, no BAD/BPA base, only rivaling corporations, IMG and Zoners. That pretty much yells: "No House is present here for real".
With the Colonisation of Sprague, O3 cannot be regarded as a Borderworld any more, imo.
Consequently, (the unlawful part of) FP1 doesn't really fit in any more.
I mean... don't change anything pls! I love having my Corsairs stationed there to avoid silly cruise distances.
