In my opinion it would be a terrible idea to remove the filter, yes it can be annoying if your legitimate use of a word is censored in a post. But as others have pointed out the filter can be by-passed for such cases or resolved by simply employing your vocabulary a little more. However the consequences of it being removed are far reaching. I maybe a relatively new player but I have read enough forum posts to envision a quick escalation from concealed insults and wit to overtly offensive messages.

Some people would just use the lack of a filter to simply offend others, this would hopefully be the minority, however in some cases the offence could be caused by a lack of knowledge. For example I saw a member complain how silly it was that someone was sanctioned for using the term m-o-n-g. To my view this member was clearly ignorant of the fact that the word is a shortened form of the word mongoloid and is nowadays considered both racist to Mongols and highly offensive to those with Down's syndrome. Now the intent may have not been there but the filter acts as a safety net for such things.

I think there is a case for the removal or reduction of the filter from the story section as those posts are not directed at individuals, however the community would have to be trusted not to abuse the lack of such a filter.

Maybe a possible solution would be to have a method of requesting a certain word to be uncensored if someone thought its censorship was overkill and for the story section there could be an option to remove the filter on the authors request, which would in turn warn readers before it opens that there might be adult content (words) .

Just my thoughts....
