A faction would get some control over the areas around a base, I mean, some {Lawful}McFool could come up to say so and so random pirate base and star mulching everything up, and then what can [Generic]Pirate_man do? [Generic] has that random pirate base cause they ahve the ID and Tag, so wouldn't they get SOME authority over what may happen in THEIR base? I would sure think so.

Verginix Out

EDIT: Cause I double Posted >.<

But what would that authority be? Lawful McFool's authority extends only to those who acknowledge his power - the idea of a SoI doesn't affect pirates v. lawful peeps.

I think...

Authority goes to whoever has rightful control over a sovereign. One can claim authority through violent actions that make any others unable to challenge his claim to ownership. Therefor, he would be the rightful and legal owner and controller of said sovereign. For bases in FL, they don't change factions like that. Outcast bases will always be under the rightful and legal control of GoR, so as long until that faction no longer exists, or the base changes to a faction that is not Outcast.

Whether others acknowledge that claim to authority or not, does not decide if that faction has authority. Up until a time that another faction ousts them and takes control of that area of space, begins to police it and defends it while GoR do not, GoR is the rightful owners and have authority over the area. They might not control it at a certain moment, but that doesn't mean the attackers have the authority of the area. They don't control the population there, or the bases. The Outcasts do, and Outcasts will continue to until those bases are no longer theres.

“In order for a war to be just, three things are necessary. First, the authority of the sovereign. Secondly, a just cause. Thirdly, a rightful intention.” -St. Thomas Aquinas.

Basically, you can't control some place without being the rightful leader and controller of it. Being the rightful controller of a space gives you the authority and legal right to police it and decide the laws of the area, as well as the responsibility of protecting it from others.

(Sorry if post is a little repetitive.. Having trouble finding the right words to use.)

Thomas Aquinas! Amazing! I didn't think anyone would ever bring him up! He was over in Paris for such a long time... back in, what, the 15th century? He was the one responsible for the merge of religions, if I remember correctly.

Back on topic: What would authority actually do, though? I haven't been able to figure it out yet...

' Wrote:Have I posted here yet? I know I voted.. oh wait, yes, I remember, I did. Sorry! Mkay, and now for some actual thought.

From how i'm reading everything, it seems that the House Factions should get to control things. Pirates Shouldn't. Outcasts and Corsairs should get to control things, too. Is this a correct interpretation?

Anywho, I wait for verification concerning my above statement insofar as House factions.
That should do. In fact, its the correct thing.
But that will bring an awful lot of complaints from those not being on the favored side of things. And that is the reason why i didnt include it on the poll as an option.

I can't remember if I posted here or what I voted anymore, but whatever I did, I now feel that the first option is correct... Partially. NPC affiliations have to be nearly absolute for the faction to have a "SoI."

For factions who do not act like the NPC's they aligned to a small effect in bordering systems (one jump hole away) should be allowed. That means destroying their enemies... And that's about it. It should be a buffer zone that allows the faction to destroy their enemies without risk to their home.

Partially true, but only partially.

Current hard-coded features of this game disallow typical conquest. A base cannot be taken over or destroyed,

If only we could get Microsoft to release the Freelancer hardcodes, we could make Discovery Uber-Freelancer!
