It's in-rp to not pay the tax. Run from the pirate, shoot the pirate, but sitting there and saying "just kill me" is not good rp in the vast majority of cases, and adding the "it's cheaper" is blatant use of game mechanics, which your characters should be oblivious to. That said, while it should be frowned upon, it shouldn't come to sanctions.

Whether or not you pay depends on the nature of your character, and the pirate's demand. I usually pay, because my Zoner values his life and that of his crew. Plus he doesn't have the pressure of punishment from a corporate boss. Most pirates as of late have been fairly reasonable. Sometimes you get taxed more than the sell value (for example, someone recently asked a $1m tax on my shipment of water with a $600k sell price), but that happens sometimes. If you explain, the pirate will often lower his price.
The only truly whine-worthy event for me was back in 4.84 when two corsairs with bad english in lunchboxes asked for $6mil tax on a food shipment to Crete, two jumps away from Crete, whilst ramming me all the while.

As a pirate, I try to be fair. I know I'm not going to get rich on piracy, and in fact my Rogue can barely keep his ship pieced together (takes the occasional /givecash charname 1000000 to cover ammo and regens). I pirate for the fun rp of it, and usually don't ask much- a few hundred thousand, or 50-75 units of their cargo if I can sell it on Rochester or a Rogue base, or if my character just decides he likes the cargo. But each pirate is different- some bloodthirsty, some just desparate to survive; some greedy, some not. Since my pirate usually works alone, he is in a weaker position as well.

But as with anything in Disco, the key is roleplay- always have a reason (unless you play a crazy person etc.), and know your character, who they are, what they do and why they do it.

Ichiro Watanabe- Naval Forces Pilot
Ayaka Watanabe- Kusari civilian, younger sister of Ichiro.

Epic gravedig. Also, the reason why this thread was started is an already solved problem. All loot caps are at 3000 now, instead of the vanilla values that were roughly one or two hundred, something you wouldn't even fill a 4.84 freighter with.

We've got some completely different issues now, and I won't bother mentioning it in this mess.

Maclypse, don't be afraid to post a new topic next time.

Hey I've got a great idea, lets come up with a whole bunch more nit-picky ideas for ways we can sanction people and drive everyone away from the server! Yaaaaaay!

:P

Personally if I'm in my Universal Super Transport pulling in 6-7mil per stop, ya I'll be willing to pay 3 mil. ESPECIALLY if whoever stopped me RPs well. But if I'm only bringing in 4 or 5mil, I'll laugh in your face if you ask for more than 2. I play lawfuls and pirates both so I know how it works on both sides. Pirates need to understand that if they charge less and make the encounter SOMEWHAT interesting by RPing properly, they will make far more than asking for exorbitant amounts and constantly having to kill or chase down their targets. A pirate who demands 1mil and gets it from 10 out of 20 people with little hassle makes more than a pirate who demands 3mil and only gets it from one or two while spending more time haggling/chasing/fighting.

Edit: As a side note, when Pirates RP well and aren't extortionist a**h***s (well, technically all pirates are;)) they build a positive reputation and when that happens, people are more likely to actually have fun interacting with them. There are a few pirates I know who frequent various runs and mining locations who are very reasonable and I have no problem throwing some credits at them. Most of them leave me alone after that even if I run into them later because I don't whine or waste their time.

Asking for 3 mil is OORP so you reap what you sow. What's the point of trading if you lose your profits even half the time? Piracy is for RP not profit.

^ Fozzie is spot on. I can't speak for anyone else, of course, but for ME the reason why I have a pirate character is so that when I get bored from trading, I can make things a bit more exciting for myself by logging in as my pirate. I never once thought to myself that I was going to get rich by being a pirate. Being a pirate is just one of the best ways to have fun, and make for some interesting roleplay.

For those of you [pirates] that think it's okay to demand 2mil from people who spent LONG hours coming up with that same 2mil, I highly advise you to create yourself another character... a trader.

It's not some secret that trading is [one of] the best way[s] to get rich. But it's also no secret that it's one of the best ways to get bored, also. It is what it is. Get over it.

So far it hasn't happened to me yet, but if I am cruising around in my Junker CSF, with a measly 500 space cargo hold, and someone demands 2mil... I will certainly be making up an RP excuse to run, and run I will. But if the demand is reasonable, I would love to engage in some quality RP at that point, which will end up making the both of us happy.

Just my two cents.

OORP wouldn't be the word for it. It may be a bit of a stretch but it is fully in RP for a pirate to ask 3 million from a rich trader. Stupid, maybe, OORP, definably not. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's OORP, so let's not go around throwing words out of context here.

White-wash to the rescue.

On a more serious note, OoRP is subjective. Furthermore, it is not in fair-play to ask for insane amounts. Since this is an OOC concept, it can be confused with OoRP, but thus besides the point.

(I was curious why people tried to invalidate the point made by pointing out an incorrect term, but my curiousity had abated after typing these words.)

Anything I say is not intended as offensive, and to try and deliberately misinterpret it as such would be an attempt at trolling via misrepresentation.

It's not a conspiracy, it's localised bias. They're not intelligent enough to form a conspiracy.

um, In my five months playing here I have never come across a pirate yet that hasn't just said "halt, 2mil or die" *blows out shields and part of hull* "hurry up" *blows me up cause I can't spell his oddly lettered name properly*. This is my point, pirates just say that and kill ya. I haven't met a decent one yet.

I have met a few decent ones. [MR] are usually willing to RP a long long. However, the downside is that they are usually only in Dublin. [RHA] Also seems good. Don't know about Liberty pirates, as I usually avoid going through it in order to not be pirated 5 times in a row. Kusari I'm just getting to know. Also, once, there was this VF) guy who pirated me off of some 20 engine parts... hehe, good one.

Interesting, let me know next time you are near the Sigmas so that we can debate the garbage issue.
