Peoples mentality about Piracy demands baffles me..

I'm sick of all the trades who complain about pirates in the first place. Many times I have heard:
"Why does this game have pirates?"
"Why can pirates use bombers?"
"You can't pirate me, I have no cargo"
etc. etc.

Traders need more a punishment on death, in order to urge them to actually interact with the pirate.

Yes. because of a few trader douchebags, punish all other traders who actually want to fly around to have nice rp encounters with pirates. Rorry is a good example for a pirate like that.

Normally I pirate traders depending on its cargo and its size.
For example, if it was carrying 5k BA, I usually demand the trader 4 million.
If a Stork has no cargo I demand the trader 3 million or 3.5 million
If the trader has an ID/IFF that is my arch enemy (such as Hessians pirating Daumann) I demand them 7-10 million.

Wow. Respect. If i ever meet you in space, i expect outstanding roleplay from you to justify your demands. Especially for empty transports.

You think it's fun for a trader to pay 3 millions for an empty ship? Sure you can always hide it in a "Hey, your ship is worth around 150 million credits and what about your crew?" RP like a certain pirate in a Ptrans ALWAYS do. Valid? Yeah. But i guess 90% of the players don't pay the pirate when it comes to a demand like this.

But sadly, you are not alone. I met two dragon Katana's a week ago with my empty Anki freighter. Demand? 10 millions or die with rp really close to a sanction. That's why we can't have nice things here.

Sure, when the trader don't want to talk at all and silently run, burn him up.

I am just pointing out that for it is funny how people do not mind being asked 100% in cargo.

Which I call a false assumption. Do it and I'll bail. Pirate as much as you can carry and we're talking. Being able to carry everything does not mean you need to ask for it though. You'll only get 3k out of it after blowing up the trader, so make that your maximum and chances are both sides get out of it still having fun.
The only situation I'm actually giving up all of my cargo is when caught smuggling. That's the fun in smuggling.

I can`t agree with the op that money-piracy is harder than cargo piracy, my experiance is quite the inverse.
Multiple times traders offered me outrageous(!! More than i would ever demand) sums of money if i only spared their cargo(which i usually demand 500-1000 units of if it is a 3,6k+ Transport) - i get people who drop and shoot the cargo claiming they fulfilled my demand by "dropping it", all that jazz.
When it comes to cash piracy people are a lot more willing....

Talking on "what to demand and expect" - while i personally don`t to the nefarious 50k piracy Valeria does i try to adjust my demands on ship-size, cargo(or lack of) and fun of the general encounter/sympathy.
So the range is from 0 Credits for a funny guy running empty to 5-10 mil for a 5ker full of ore trying silent running.
What works best to get that cash for me is toaim for a fun encounter that is personalize not the same old 2mil or die 10times over...so far that works acceptably well and i do earn all my cash by working the lanes


What i don`t understand with traders is that they do very boring stuff(to me) following waypoint after waypoint. Only interaction cheers things up and pirates are one kind of interaction, so why do some of you guys don`t make the best out of it, after all while you are clicking waypoint after waypoint that pirate dude was idling around for 20min waitng for something to happen- cash is ok, but the encounter is what keeps disco running!

Trader will not pay a full price, never.
First off, there's always a little chance that he can escape.
Second, if he dies, he looses no more than the full price. He can easily switch the route to avoid the system he was killed in, and the "bad pirate" gets nothing.

Math-wise, current worth of the cargo is (sell_price - buy_price) * time_spent_on_the_route(current_position) / full_route_time(route_length) + buy_price
So, if some smart dude is asked for full price when he did only 90% of the route, he prefers to die, because it's better profit-wise.

while the maths do make perfect reason in a true economic situation....we are palying a game after all, where everyone should be out for the maximum fun(and i hope big pixel numbers is not the major fun source for teh majority of traders) - what disco lacks is the mindset of "if i help creating a enjoyable gaming experiance for everyon, everyone will do the same for me" - and this is the issue not only with pirates vs traders, it is always me me me me first, screw the rest...

Yeah. Though. Your second example doesn't count for Cargo piracy. Especially for Ore and other valuable goods. And don't forget the time you spent for mining and the route itself.

i think the answer is simple

your cargo is worth as much as you payed for it - until very very close to your turn in point.

cargo is only worth the turn in - when the turn in is almost certain.

as a pirate - i am a bit at a loss why i would ask a trader for over 5 millions. - i don t pirate to buy me a battleship. - i only pirate to cover my piracy expenses. - i m not sure how much inRP it would be for my char to try to accumulate money via piracy in order to purchase a battleship.

i have conducted cargo drop piracy - but it made me feel bad. - when i ask myself how i would feel if i had been on the receiving end - i had to admit to myself that i would not enjoy it

... so why would i do it to others - just cause i currently sit on the nice end of a SNAC...

i have made the observation that you get MUCH better results as a pirate when you get the trader into a situation where he feels comfortable ( as stupid as it may sound )

- so i do initially ask for little ( 500k ) - i know that this does not hurt a 5k trader
- i take my time - and i do talk ( maybe cause gaians still do have an agenda they wish to spread )

when a trader gets the feeling that you don t make a silly countdown - and that you actually take your time - and that the worst to come is 500k or if he really pushes it - destruction ... i have had very few traders that were a disappointing encounter.

of course - we do have much more badass pirates out there that roleplay to take what they can - fair enough... but for me - that would not be of any fun.
