Welp. I find that duel wield daggers is the way to go for speed and power. And uh, you can basically get bettter duel wield speed through the perk system and strength behind your stabs as well.
Blade of Woe + Mehrune Dagon's Razor = :ylove:

spam chain lighthing with items that reduce destruction spells and you'r good to go... even on master you'r a killing machine but mages are boredom i prefer sneaking and stabbing

I greatly enjoy using the "Cloak" spells. That and summoning things is very fun. Essentially you can cover yourself in some kind of element. Very fun when using Flame Cloak and a Flame Antronarch or somesuch. Foes already burning take additional damage, afterall. Additionally, using Ice Spike on Dragons is a good idea. It drains their stamina, so they crash to the ground and cannot fly as easily. Blood and Ancient Dragons don't stand a chance.
One tip I can give, though, is that you shouldn't wear armor. There's a perk in Alteration that will give you 2-3 times armor from Alteration magic spells. Later you can also get a spell which reduces physical damage by a set percentage (85% I believe). Really no reason for armor at that point.
Then again I don't care about min/maxing anything so I'm sure someone will tell me the Mage Armor perk is stupid.

The Mage Armor perk is stupid:)
No really, you can cast it without armor on, and then put armor on, and it'll stack.
There's also no downside to casting while wearing heavy armor, like Oblivion had, so the only disadvantage is the speed...
My very first, I scrapped because I didnt like how he ended up looking - so I recreated him, sort of, and with lessons learned I knew how I wanted to distribute my perks. I musta dumped at least 10 hours of gameplay, and retracing my steps was kinda hard.
So far tho, the most recent character which has over 40 hours in him, is great. He looks the way I wanted, and now that im lvl 35, Im having a hard time lvling, and have started dabbling into skills I previously ignored, like sneaking, and archery.
Tried creating a female breton mage\sneak archer, but restarting everything was a bit tough. Great thing about that character is, I'll be using her to get into the Mages\Thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood, which im completely disregarding with this current playthrough.
