I looked at my archives and the following ones stood up. My understanding of horror is more like the uneasy feeling I get. I don't like movies that makes "bwaaaaah! surprise!!" and makes you jump. You can do that at home as well..

My list (modern or old, good is good so I m writing all)

- The Thing (Carpenter version)
- Exorcism of Emily Rose
- The Mist
- Seven
- Shutter Island
- 30 Days of Night
- The Descent
- The Shining
- Funny Games (original one if you can find)
- Saw 1
- Basic Instinct 1
- Silent Hill
- Any South Korean movie =)

Again, atmosphere, not jumpy.

Here's a few:

House of 1000 Corpses & The Devil's Rejects

Cabin Fever

28 Days/Weeks Later

Dawn of the Dead (Remake)

Jacob's Ladder

Bubba Ho-Tep (more of a horror-comedy, but you can't beat a Bruce Campbell flick about a geriatric Elvis that escapes a nursing home to save the world from a mummy that sucks souls outta bungholes)

Red State

I could go on, but I've no clue how much of a genre fan you are, so I'm just shooting in the dark here

I've watched Martyrs with my friend. It has kinda shocked me, i don't know but the second act was really disturbing, as well as the whole plot

Evil Dead is good, but mostly for black humour. :P

Most Western "horror" films are a joke. They're nothing but gratuitous gore fests. You're better off watching zombie films.

"Saw 3 and 4" are the one of the best parts of horror movies i ever watched. Also "Paranormal Activity 1,2,3" pretty scary i must say.

Mind listing me your favourites ? Should be rather "modern". Thanks!

I like japanese horror movies. Ju-on, Kuchisake-onna, Ringu etc.
