Morrigan, do mean the game and its infocards or the chatter at all?
The infocards dont show this up but scince the very first mod which enabled Battleships in Frelancer these were called BS.

LancerZero, great that your father was a member of the US navy. But you will be surprised there are other navys around the world with other designations.
If i may ask what are the current designations of frigates?

Nope, I actually wouldn't be a bit surprised. See, he also had a manual of Soviet ships, including both their NATO names and the designations the Soviets gave them. Obviously, an acronym would be meaningless in most other languages, so different countries have very different designations. It's logical. Just because I'm an American, and living in Texas, doesn't mean I'm an arrogant snot that has no idea that the whole world doesn't name their ships like the USN does.:P

For frigates in the USN, the only current designation that I'm aware of is FF, as the USN has no guided missile frigates.

For USN destroyers, there's DD for your usual anti-submarine destroyers; and DG for guided missile destroyers.

FF or FFG (Oliver Hazard Perry class)

Edit/ And DDG is guided missile destroyer, like the Arleigh Burke class

I forgot the Oliver Hazard Perry class?! Oy! They used to be my favorite class of ship. Small, utilitarian, but still capable of ocean voyages. Any wonder I like gunboats in Freelancer?:PYes, you're right; FFG for guided missile frigates.

Hehe, LancerZero.
Well, i'm asking because the designations of the German Fedal Forces are somewhat short: F for Frigate followed by three numbers.

btw:
beside the
Oliver-Hazard-Perry-Class
there are the Bremen-Class (F-122) and the Brandenburg-Class (F-123) Frigates

Guess who owns the most modern Frigate. :P

It's sensible for the German Navy to have the most modern frigate; they have more need of one. They need to keep their coastal waters safe; they don't make it their job to project naval power across the globe. So they have smaller - but more modern - capitol ships.

And, Morrigan...the USN's aircraft carriers are without compare, BUT the design is also what? 25 years old?:P

My favorite naval warships that I've seen are from the Soviet and British navies. They build 'em pretty.:)

And this topic is diverging...mebbe a new topic in General Discussion is in order? Or a topic move? Because I think we're done with the original topic.

EDIT @ Blunt: Some European countries have some seriously awesome new diesel-electric coastal subs, though. They lack the ability to cross oceans and fight properly in open water, but in the coastal zones that surround Europe they're formidable indeed.
