After you become thane of whiterun you gain a housecarl, who's name is Lydia, and follows your around carrying your stuff for you, and hitting things with swords.
Yes she can die, however more often than not followers end up causing me to die.
Well, I have her with me always. she's like a shopping trolly waving a giant sword. sure, she gets in the way, yes, she jumps in front of your firebreath and eats every single lightning bolt Storm Shout creates and she's as daft as a pig's bottom. but she does help. more or less. Id have died way more if I handt dragged her along.
It's now my self set goal to finish the entire game with her not dieing on me.
Actually, you can get housecarls from OTHER Jarls as well, by being named Thane in those cities. Lydia is notorious for being sort of weak since she's typically one of the first housecarls that you can get, since your followers levels are based upon YOUR level when you first encounter them.
After the 6th or 7th time of restarting a save because Lydia got killed, I just left her dead.
So far I've gotten Faedal, Anneke Crag-Jumper, Lydia, and Vigilence (one of the dogs) killed following me. (EDIT: And two horses...)
Frostbite spiders are a simple one (or at most, two) shot kills with my bow. Even when they actually shoot their freezing snot out, it doesn't do enough damage to matter.
The whole thing with daggers that is so cool is that if you sneak up behind the person, and they remain surprised, it's not that you're actually hitting them for 15x damage, it's that you get the video of you quite literally cutting their throat. So pop - insta-kill on them, regardless of their level and/or abilities.

She is sworn to carry your burdens.

This is a common misconception. Lydia (and all followers) actually do level up with you (and you can check this with the console), it's just that there's a bug that her stats don't always get recalculated correctly so her health will be lower than it should. That can be fixed with the console.

Pretty sure that only happens if you would've killed them anyway--all of the finishing move cinematics are that way.

I married her and then Fus'ed her in a river. A couple of days later I letter from the Jarl with a compensation and condolences
Even when I hook a USB keyboard up to it, the console still doesn't activate...
I'm not sure about the dagger cinematics - I've had a couple of npc's hit me and one shot kill me when at other times (after reloading and refighting) the npc's die.

Phbbt. PC is the way to go for Elder Scrolls games. Mods ftw!

Yeah, no way to get the console on consoles (...wut?). Shame really...hopefully they'll patch it at some point.

Maybe they crit? All kinds of things can change.
I've also noticed that some things don't properly get saved/restored in a save, so it's possible they were actually easier when you reloaded...
