So I see a lot of threads about how dieing should be handled in this game, and it set me off to thinking.
You see, one of my pet annoyances with combat oriented gaming over the years has been the lack of fear and consequence. People very rarely care if they die or not.
It's not just Discovery, but seeing as this is a roleplaying server, and I am here, playing on it, I've decided to put my money where my mouth.
I solemnly pledge to you, that any of my characters who suffer the destruction of their vessel, wether it be from the actions of my fellow players, or my inability to combat NPC's, will not be used for the next day or two, as the medics and mechanics ply their respective trade on my riddled left overs.
None of my characters are insane fanatics willing to die for their cause, and my flying skills pretty much deny me the opportunity to play someone with supreme confidence in their own abilities, so don't be surprised if some days I decide discretion is the better part of valour and try to avoid or disengage from you.
Hopefully the threat of not being able to play at all for the next couple of days should add an element of consequence to any engagement I get into, shoud be fun:)
For the record, my characters are :
[QCO]Stan_Mckhanic : Hussar, piloted by Lt Stan Mckhanic in the service of the Bretonnian Armed Forces
Ferdi.Lombardi[202nd] : Outcast Saber piloted by the inept Junky Ferdinand Lombardi
Seelie : BowEx Large Train piloted by Sean Campbell, who some days is actually sober.
I don't expect anyone else to play by the same rules I'm imposing on myself, but I just thought I'd put them up for all to see, so I don't have the option of backing out of it without losing face:)
such a promise works of course - personally ( but only for my main character to be honest ) i rename the ship --> pretending its a new ship or generally repaired/refitted ship - so it takes at least untill the namechange is in effect till i can use the ship again.
but for my fighter chars - i play by the server rules... it just happens so fast that you are shot down when you re not really prepared for it. - but for the battleship, i think taking it out for a longer time is just inRole
Stan good idea. I will also start playing by this guidline. If you destroy any of my guys' ship that ship is out for 48 hours, and that guy is out for 24 hours (I have multiple ships of the same guy.)
My Characters:
Victor Remond
Victor_Remond
RepEx*BT|Victory
Alan Groteck
RepEx-Shipping|868'
Alan_Groteck
Vengence
[RoS]Vengence[V]
Mike Bennet
Camera_Guy (if you kill this guy I'll put a bounty on your head larger then DaysofThunder got. And he's lvl 29 so I'll stick BullDog on ya;))
...well, seems I get to test my resolve already, Ferdinand just got vaped after suffering a critical systems failure in the middle of an engagement with some corsairs (red lag, so I cut the engines and stopped fighting)
Seems the reinforcements decided the easy kill was worth it!:P
If it is possible it would be great if Igiss could make it so that players loose cash when they die.
Iv seen it on other servers so whenever a player dies he loses 50 000 credits.
But i think in this mod that amount should be raised to 5 or 10 mil, or if possible compare it to players level.
That would make a game more realistic, since players would then avoid being killed.
This should also apply only for PvP so new players trying to earn money by doing missions would not lose all their credits with one death.
Hey it's not a bad idea, but i guess I disagree. Maybe having to lose that ship for a day is a good idea but that would mean people using more characters...and isn't that the reason for opening New York to RP.....to keep the numbers down. Not to mention the weekly wipes of players as there are too many on the server.
At least one of my characters dies quite regularely, however in other characters that i have it's really hard getting someone to engage you in an RP sense. You sometimes need to ask people to spar just to see how your ship is coming along.
I'm guessing that if you imposed a death penalty fee then no one would engage at all, unless it's 2 on 1, 3 on 1 or battleship against popper.
I guess i die alot as i tend to be outclassed, (obvoiusly) and on occaision outnumber.
So i'm guessing that the actuality of having a dogfight would be long gone.
Unless one of the pre organized fights with the Big boys and where does that leave the guys starting out.
The idea is there but needs some refinement:)

That's why pilots don't name their fighters, obviously.:P
Don't worry Ferdi... Lacus (and later Giovanni, when after the server crash I switched to me 101st [and Lacus hadn't died]) got a Rampage, and managed to down enough enemy fighters to make up for your lag. All cool.
My 2 cents on this is that it's a good idea, but I don't think I can do it. I try not to PvP after I get killed, but putting the character away? Don't think I could do that... like amigo7 said, I tend to be outclassed a lot, so... yeah.

I agree wit RP'g your death, but i would'nt agree to taking this much money when someone died.. it would unfairly advantage those who were good at pvp... traders wouldnt really care about death (they could afford it)
and anyone (such as myself) who has bad lag on thier connection would also be pretty screwed..
